CHARLESTON – Men's Track and Field began their outdoor schedule on Friday as they hosted the CSU Buccaneer Invitational presented by East Bay Deli with many quality showings across events.
In the javelin,
Aaron Pierce took the title in it with a throw of 60.08m on the day, close behind his personal best in the event set last season. Teammate
Landry Polk joined him in the top of the field as he threw for a career best of 51.88m to take fourth in the event.
Jeff Wedding cruised through the field in the 2K steeplechase with his time of 5:58.24 in the event. He finished over 30 seconds ahead of the field in it.
In the 100m, Carl Murray was second through the prelims and then took second in the finals with his faster time of 10.66 coming in the first round.
Luciano Custodio took the victory in the 400m hurdles for the men. He crossed the line at 53.18 for the victory.
Gus Cortezi made his outdoor debut with the Bucs and took fourth with his 57.71.
Shawn Langley Jr. won the 200 with his time of 21.53 in the event. He also raced on the school's 4x400 relay team which took first with a time of 3:17.22, less than a second off the program top ten list.
In the 1500, the Buccaneers took 3-9 in the race with an unattached runner taking the top finish in it.
Griffin Gillespie had the top time for CSU in the event with his 3:52.09.
The day ended with a pair of heats for the men's 5K with CSU having a pair of their runners who competed as unattached take the top finishes in
Jaden Kingsley and
Micah Gilpatric.
Sam Waldin took third in it with his 14:17.43, the fourth-fastest by a runner in program history.
Caleb Kenyon also had a good showing as he rounded out the finishers in the elite heat. Tim Depue won his heat of the event in a blazing time of 14:57.75 running on his own for nearly a third of the race.
Odinn Ferency won the shot put at the meet and now ranks 10
th for it in the school record books with a best heave of 15.24m.
Aaron Pierce took second in it at 14.11m.
Charleston Southern returns to the track next weekend as they will be competing in the Weems-Baskin Invitational hosted by South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.
