Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - Charleston Southern was unable to hold off a second half surge by the host Flames on Saturday afternoon at the Vines Center as the Buccaneers fell to Liberty in Big South Conference action, 64-53.
The Buccaneers held a 31-29 lead at the break before Liberty went on a 13-2 run to open the second half on their way to building a double-digit advantage the rest of the way as CSU closed out the road portion of their 2015 schedule.
CSU returns home to the Buc Dome this week as the Bucs prepare for their final tune-up before the 2015 Big South Conference Championships, hosting Presbyterian on Tuesday night and Longwood on Senior Day on Saturday. Tipoff on Tuesday against the Blue Hose is set for 7 p.m. on the Big South Network.
The Buccaneers scored 13 of the last 19 points of the first half on their way to building a two-point halftime advantage over the final four minutes. With CSU trailing 23-18, Tatum Jarvis connected on a layup before Alise Karlsone went on a personal 9-3 run to put the Bucs ahead by three with 1:36 remaining. After the Flames tied it up from the free throw line, Alecia Hardy drove in for the go-ahead layup with four seconds remaining to put the teams into the break with CSU leading 31-29.
Liberty tied the game up for the fourth and final time with their first basket of the second half as Katelyn Adams made a layup sparking a 13-2 run. Karly Buer connected on a three-pointer on the next Flames' trip down the court and Adams converted a pair of free throws to offset a Monique Maximilien layup as the Flames continued to press in building a 42-33 lead with 15:34 to play.
The Flames continued to press their advantage in going up double-digits, building a 15-point lead on a Catherine Kearney tip-in to put the score at 50-35. Liberty went up by as many as 16 in the second half on a Sadalia Ellis' layup and the Bucs were unable to bring the game back within single digits in falling for the second time to the Flames.
Liberty jumped out to the early double-digit lead over the first eight minutes of the contest as the Flames went ahead 15-5 on a Jaymee Fisher-Davis three-pointer with 12:33 to play in the first half. Hardy, Jarvis and Shauntavia Dobson brought the Bucs back into the game with three three-pointers before CSU's late first half surge.
Karlsone led three Bucs in double-digits on the day with 14 points as the senior from Saldus, Latvia went 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Alyssa Mann was also in double-digits with 11 points on three three-pointers, while Alecia Hardy had 10 points off the bench.
Ashley Rininger posted a double-double for the Flames with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Buer was in double-digits with 10 points and two steals.
Charleston Southern falls to 5-22, 1-17 in Big South action with the loss, while Liberty improves to 21-6, 17-1 in conference play with the win.
