Drummond claims long jump title at Big South Championships

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern's Braxton Drummond added yet another title to a banner junior season on Friday with a victory in the long jump at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Drummond jumped 7.65 meters on his fifth attempt to claim the long jump championship and nearly match the Big South record distance he established at the Alex Wilson Invitational in February. The Spartanburg, S.C. native beat out his closest competitor in the 22-man field, Liberty's Kenny Scott, by 0.39 meters.

Drummond's jump puts him in position to qualify for the NCAA East Regional in May. He earned First Team All-American status thanks to a seventh place finish in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

As a team, the Bucs stand in second place after the conclusion of day one with 22 points, six behind first-place Liberty.

Clarence Gallop and Cleveland German also delivered another quality performances for coach Roosevelt Lofton and the Bucs in the hammer throw, placing 2nd and 5th respectively. Gallop threw 59.21 meters, while German tossed 56.32.

CSU is back in action Friday on day two of the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Among the competitors to watch for the Bucs will be sophomore Jared Jeter, who runs in the 400-meter dash trials at 5:45 p.m. Jeter enters the event with the Big South's top mark for the campaign and the 12th best overall in the country.
