ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Big South Men's Track and Field Championships ended on Wednesday evening with the team claiming fourth with a team score of 80 points.
They fielded entrees in just the distance and throwing events, totaling all of their points from those disciplines. They also fielded a group for the 4x400m relay.
The first running event to be scored on the week was the men's 10K with
Caleb Kenyon and
Zack Wedding each scoring in it. Kenyon claimed fourth while Wedding was sixth with their personal best times of 30:44.38 and 31:16.38. Kenyon remains eighth in school history for the event while Wedding broke into the top ten as he now sits in ninth.
On Tuesday evening, they had the 3K steeplechase with
Griffin Gillespie finishing in second place with a personal best time of 9:05.34 for the fourth-best in school history.
Mason Raasch also ran in it and scored as he was seventh overall with a 9:44.46.
The first distance final held on Wednesday was the 1500m with the Buccaneers sending all four of their entrees through the prelims. Gillespie was the top finisher on the team claiming third for his second podium finish of the week.
Martin Iriondo,
Jaden Kingsley and
Collin Kleinhen also scored as they went 5-7-8 in the race.
Another event that the squad was able to tally up points was the men's 5K as they went in order from 5-6-7. Kingsley led the Bucs to the line and was followed by Iriondo and Kenyon.
They got their final points on the track from Kleinhen in the 800m with his fifth place finish and the men's 4x400m relay. The relay squad took seventh with their 3:24.13 which featured all distance runners.
The Buccaneers got on the board in the first event of the meet, the men's hammer throw.
Michael Calhoun threw 50.43m in it for fifth overall while
Odin Ferency threw 49.30m for seventh and a personal best.
Tuesday began with the men's javelin throw with
Aaron Pierce giving Charleston Southern their first individual win of the week. He threw for a personal best of 66.87m to win the event with his mark ranking #51 in the nation and #24 in the East Region.
Landry Polk also was able to score in the event with a 53.26m for eighth.
In the shot put, the Buccaneers had a pair of podium finishers with Calhoun claiming second and Ferency taking third. Calhoun had his best mark on the day be 17.72m while Ferency had a career-best of 16.31m.
Aaron Pierce threw14.97m to claim eighth.
The final field event for the team was the men's discus. Ferency took home another scoring finish on the week with his performance in the event. He threw a 45.72m to take seventh in the field.
The meet ends the 2025 regular season for Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers are expected to have multiple qualifiers for the NCAA East Prelims later this month with the field for this year's first round of the NCAA Championships to be announced on Thursday, May 22.
