German wins shot put in strong start to outdoor season

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Charleston Southern's Richie German, Clarence Gallop and Sheldon Townsend captured individual titles to lead the Bucs at the Palmetto Track & Field Classic on Friday.

German, a senior from Mt. Pleasant, paced CSU and head coach Roosevelt Lofton in their first competition of the outdoor season. He won the shot put with a throw of 14.33 meters, while teammates Jacob Moore and Malik Graham finished third and fifth.

Gallop and Townsend also got their outdoor campaigns off on the right foot, as the freshmen secured championships in the hammer throw and 200-meter dash. Gallop threw 57.32 meters to pace the hammer throw field, while Townsend ran the 200-meter in 23.86 seconds to place first. Gallop's hammer throw set a school record by 7.5 feet and a meet record by a whopping 13 feet. The throw qualifies him for the USATF Jr. Nationals this July at the University of Oregon.

In the 200-meter, CSU also saw Alex Phillips and Kaishon Murray earn 3rd and 5th place finishes, respectively.

Zach Long and Avery Coe performed well for the Bucs as well, earning third place finishes in their events. Long ran the 800-meter in 2:01.49, while Coe took third in the long jump with a leap of 6.17 meters.

CSU next competes at the Weems Baskin Invitational in Columbia, hosted by the University of South Carolina, from March 21-22.
