CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Charleston Southern senior Richie German the school record in the weight throw and junior Braxton Drummond won the long jump, nearing his 2013 NCAA mark, as the Bucs turned in a strong showing at the 2014 Tarheel Open on the University of North Carolina campus on Saturday.
German broke his own school record in the weight throw for the second-straight week reaching 17.96 on his third attempt to win the event in a field of 22. He added to his day by taking second in the shot put with a toss of 14.41 meters on his second try of the day.
Drummond won the long jump against a field of 23 with a 7.39-meter effort on his first try of the day. He won by over a half a meter and came up just shy of his 7.63 mark that landed him in the NCAA Championships a year ago.
Senior Rozzie Johnson was the top collegiate finisher in the 200 meters, posting a 22.27 in his first attempt at the 200M this season. He also took fifth in the 60 meters with a 6.89, just off his personal best of 6.72 seconds.
Following German's success in the shot put was freshman Jacob Moore, who set the CSU freshman record in the event with a 14.32-meter toss on his third try to finish just behind German.
Sophomore E.J. Reddick and junior Avery Coe took second and third in the long jump. Neither hit the 14.5-meter mark they reached last week, but both were solid as Coe reached 14.39 meters and Coe 14.28.
Junior Kuaniyal Chol took fourth in the 800 meters with a 1:55.1, a full second faster than his time last week on the same track. He was third among collegians at the meet.
Two Bucs ran the 1-mile as freshman Zach Long took 12th and Scott Morrison finished 20th racing for the first time this year.
The Buccaneers travel to Clemson University next weekend for the Bob Pollack Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
