Down to Final Out, Bucs Best Pirates, 6-4

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team staged a two-out seventh inning rally to score three runs and defeat Hampton, 6-4, in second round play of the CSU Tournament at Buccaneer Field on Saturday morning.

Playing as the away team, CSU entered the seventh trailing 4-3 but got a leadoff double from Megan Lombard without a threat. Lombard advanced to third on a wild pitch, but a pair of groundouts put the Bucs one out away from dropping their fourth consecutive contest. Jana Matthews made sure that would not be the case, though, as the junior left fielder delivered a clutch RBI single to right-center field to tie the game at 4-4.

CSU continued to wreak havoc with two outs, as Matthews moved up to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate with the go-ahead run when senior Kristin Kelleher drilled a RBI double to center field. Linzy Rother then capped a 4-for-4, 3 RBI day by providing insurance with a run-scoring double through the left side of the infield for a 6-4 cushion. It was Rother's second two-bagger of the day, as the junior also compiled 11 putouts in the field at first base.

Morgan Dowdy (5-1) did not allow the Pirates to entertain any thoughts of a rally in the bottom of the frame, notching a strikeout and two groundouts to move the Bucs to 6-3 on the young season. The junior right-hander continued an outstanding start to the year by picking up the victory with 3.0 innings of one-hit ball in relief of Spencer Adkinson, who yielded four runs on six hits over 4.0 innings.

Matthews teamed with Rother to pack the punch in the middle of the lineup, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, 2 RBI, and two runs scored. Her RBI single scored the first CSU run of the day in a three-run fourth inning, while Rother brought home the next two with a two-run double to center.

CSU hits the diamond again later today against UMBC with a scheduled first pitch time of 11 a.m.
