MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Charleston Southern played a pair of make
up games vs. the College of Charleston Cougars, taking a sweep with
6-4 and 4-2 wins Sunday, at Patriot's Point Field. The Bucs posted
a combined 17 hits on the day, including three home runs and eight
hits for extra bases. CSU improved to 2-2 on the young season
while CofC dropped their first two games of the year.
Erin Kegley led the way on a big offensive day, posting five
hits, two RBIs and a home run. Megan Lombard also recorded five
hits and two RBIs, while tallying a pair of doubles. Shayla Cullum
chipped in with two doubles and an RBI. For the Cougars, Amber
Shifflett had three hits, two runs scored and a homerun.
Game one started with a pair of scoreless innings, with Sondra
Vetter recording three strikeouts in the process. Both teams
posted a pair of runs in the third inning, starting with a two RBI
single for Lombard. CofC responded with a two out rally in the
bottom of the inning, tying things up at two apiece.
CSU stranded a pair on base in the fourth inning, but added one
more in the top of the fifth. A two out rally had back-to-back
doubles from Lombard and Cullum, giving the Bucs a 3-2 advantage.
CSU managed to generate another run in the sixth, thanks to a
lead-off single from Kegley. After a wild pitch and a stolen base,
Jana Matthews was credited with a RBI sacrifice fly.
The Bucs were on top 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but the
Cougars made a game of it, evening out the score with a two-run
homerun. Using another two out rally, Amanda Lonergan managed to
send out the two-run shot.
CSU responded in a big way in the top of the seventh, as Cullum
reached base first with a double. Kegley then posted a two-out RBI
double for the go ahead run. Kristen Kelleher added one more run
with an RBI single, putting the Bucs on top 6-4. Vetter retired
the final three batters in order, wrapping up the first game with
the final 6-4 score.
Vetter picked up her first win of the season, allowing just five
hits and striking out nine, while Stephanie Saylors was credited
with the loss.
Game One Box
Another two scoreless innings started the second game of the
doubleheader, despite a lead-off double from Lombard to start the
contest. Similar to the first game, CSU had two runs in the third,
taking a lead that they would never surrender. After a pair of fly
outs, Lombard reached base with a single and Cullum sent out a
two-run homer.
CofC tallied a run in the bottom of the inning, but the Bucs
continued to roll with two more in the top of the fourth. CSU
showcased their ability to hit the long ball in the inning, as
Kegly posted a lead-off home run and Matthews followed with her
second homer of the season, giving the Bucs a 4-1 lead.
Both teams put up blanks in the fifth inning, with no hits from
either side. The Cougars showed some life from there, with a pair
of hits in the sixth. Both runners would be left stranded however,
as CSU went to the final inning with a three run advantage.
CofC did manage a homerun from Shifflett in the bottom of the
seventh to make it interesting, but the Bucs held on for the win
with a final 4-2 score.
Kimberly Hobbs had a strong showing in game two, allowing just two
runs and striking out six in a complete game. Terri Mesco picked
up the loss after three and a third innings work.
Game Two Box
CSU will look to keep things going, as they play their home opener
in a double header vs. the Campbell Camels on Tuesday, February 16,
at 2 p.m.
