Charleston Southern Storms Past Radford 3-1 on Friday to Cap Off Team's Cancer Awareness Night

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern stormed to a 3-1 victory on Friday night over Radford to kickoff the two-game homestand. The contest was designated as their Cancer Awareness Night for the season with celebrations planned around it before and during the match. The teams battled all night with there being a total of 13 lead changes in the sets and 26 times the score got tied.
 
The Highlanders opened the night with a back-and-forth win in the first set. The visitors started to break away after the media timeout and took the frame 25-20.
 
Buccaneers got off and running as they went on to cruise to the match victory after winning the next three games. In the second, the Bucs fought off a big deficit as they found themselves down 12-6 early and rattled off four in a row to bring themselves back into it. Late in the set, they still trailed again by six points as they were down 22-16. CSU rattled off the next five to bring it within one and ended up taking the frame 27-25 to tie the match at 1-1.
 
In the third, Charleston Southern used a pair of 4-0 runs to power ahead and claim the victory by a final score of 25-17. The Bucs hit at .353 during the frame collecting 15 kills with Skylar Yates having seven during it.  
 
In the fourth and finale frame, both teams went back-and-forth with the lead as they traded large runs. The biggest run of the night came from CSU as they tallied seven unanswered to take a 21-16 lead. Radford responded with an 8-1 run to put themselves a point away from forcing a fifth set. The night ended with the Bucs bouncing back one final time as they took five of the final six points to seal the victory at 27-25.
 
Skylar Yates led the team in kills as she finished with 14 and had Jyriah Morgan and Emmy Rollins finish with eight apiece. Faith Burch stepped in late during the second set and collected seven kills for a new career high. The team went back to running with two setters and Ilaria Durante lead the team with 22 assists and had Kahea Carvalho end the night with 14.
 
Defensively, Mallory Neale stepped into the libero spot for the team and tied for the team lead with 18 digs. Durante also had 18 at the end of the night and Yates joined the pair in double figures with 12. Morgan led the team in total blocks as she picked up four to set a season-high and tie her career-high.
 
Charleston Southern returns to the court on Saturday afternoon to face off with High Point. The Panthers are the last remaining undefeated team in Big South play this year as they stand at 6-0 entering the contest.
