Torres elevated to defensive backs coach

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern head football coach Autry Denson has announced the promotion of Gabriel Torres from graduate assistant to full-time assistant coach working with the defensive backs for the 2022 season.

WITH THE BUCS
Torres has been with CSU since July 2020, serving as a defensive graduate assistant coach and working primarily with the cornerbacks. He assisted defensive coordinator Zane Vance this past season, coaching outside linebackers and helping to create and assemble scouting reports, cutups and opponent breakdowns. On game days, he communicated offensive formations and personnel, down and distance situations and the opposing offenses' plays and tendencies.

In his first season on campus, he helped direct a defense that landed eight Top-30 national rankings and had two players earn All-Big South honors.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRESSION
Torres first entered the college football world as a student assistant in the video and recruiting office at North Texas in the fall of 2018. He assisted former video coordinator Zack Peters and the Mean Green's chief of staff Luke Walerius with talent evaluation of prospective and walk-on athletes. He helped to execute on-campus visits, including activities and game day hospitality, and entered data into the program's online recruiting database, which grew to more than 10,000 prospects.

By January 2019, he moved onto head coach Seth Littrell's staff as an undergraduate defensive assistant role under the lead of defensive coordinator Troy Reffett and his staff. Torres worked directly with four different position coaches in a year-and-a-half, learning all facets of the UNT schemes. He was responsible for opponent breakdowns, charting defensive calls, opponent scout team offensive formations, alignments and assignments. He analyzed for opposing offenses' tendencies, charted offensive formations, personnel and down and distance during games.

EDUCATION
Torres earned his undergraduate degree in May 2020 from North Texas. He completed his bachelor's in recreation, event and sport management with a 3.2 GPA. He added a master's degree from Charleston Southern in May 2022, graduating in human resource management and earning a 3.95 GPA.

PERSONAL
Torres grew up in his hometown of Haskell, Texas, and graduated from Bridgeport HS in 2013. He is also an alumnus of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity (Gamma Xi Chapter).
