Smith; Carroll under par as Bucs finish round one

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Alan Smith and Ben Carroll both fired under par scores Monday, ranking among the Top-10 individuals, as the Charleston Southern men's golf team sits near the middle of the pack following round one play at the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate in Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

SMITH SETS SPRING LOW
For Smith, he used three birdies and one bogey to break up an otherwise Even-par round on his way to his lowest score thus far, this spring, with a 2-under 70 to tie for fourth and place himself two strokes behind the leader after the opening 18. He birdied the par-5, 548-yard No. 4; par-5, 584-yard No. 10 and par-4, 445-yard No. 17. In between, he strung together six-straight pars from No. 11 through No. 17 on his way to a 33 on the back nine. He had a pair of three-hole stretches with pars on the front, No. 1 through No. 3 and No. 7 through No. 9.

CARROLL ENDS DAY UNDER PAR, AS WELL
A second member of the Bucs squad also carded an under-par total during the first round, as Carroll matched Smith with three birdies but had two bogies to finish his first 18 at 1-under par 71, tying for 10th. His best of consecutive pars was five-in-a-row, covering No. 11 through No. 16. He also had a four-hole span, starting at No. 1 through No. 4. His dropped in his birdies on the par-4, 424-yard No. 5; par-4, 382-yard No. 8 and No. 10.

LOUDIN LEADS IN BIRDIES
Caleb Loudin was the next Buccaneers player in the clubhouse, tallying a 3-over par 75. The key to his round was six birdies, sharing with two others the top spot through the first-18 holes. He posted birdies on the front nine on No. 4 and the par-4, 404-yard No. 6 before adding four more after making the turn on his way to a 33 on the back nine. His birdies included No. 10 and then three successfully, including the par-4, 407-yard No. 12; par-4, 410-yard No. 13 and par-3, 145-yard No. 14.

TARVER LAST SCORER
An Even par back nine with a par on every hole kept Griffin Tarver among the CSU counters with his 4-over 76. He had six other pars on the front nine, giving him 15 on the day, to rank second in the overall field, one behind the most.

WILLIS JUST BEHIND
Although he didn't factor into Monday's team score, Ethan Willis is just one stroke back of Tarver following a 5-over 77. He earned birdies on No. 4 and the par-5, 590-yard No. 15, while stringing together six-straight pars from No. 9 through No. 14. He also had a three-hole stretch on the front, No. 5 through No. 7, with pars.
