HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Charleston Southern was among the majority of teams Monday who nearly completed a full 36 holes for each of their respective individuals but darkness prevented the full first day of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate to be finished. Three of the five Buccaneers turned in scorecards for two rounds with the remaining two having one hole left before each member of the quintet returns to the Wexford Golf Club links Tuesday to play round three of the spring season-opening event.
IN THE CLUBHOUSE
Among the trio of Bucs to finish,
Ethan Willis leads the way with a 4-over par 73-75—148 to tie for 28th thus far. His opening 18 featured a birdie on his opening hole, the par-4, 415-yard No. 10, and three more to close the first nine. He parred the par-4, 382-yard No. 14 and par-5, 544-yard No. 15, leading to a series of birdies on the par-4, 415-yard No. 16, par-3, 189-yard No. 17 and the par-4, 389-yard No. 18, bringing his overall score to Even with nine holes to play. Once he made the turn for the first time, he registered five pars among his first-six holes before a birdie on the par-4, 360-yard No. 7 and an eagle on the par-5, 543-yard No. 8, helping to get his overall score back under par but a bogey on No. 9 left him 1-over for the round.
Willis started his second round with back-to-back pars before adding three more on the back nine plus a pair of birdies after teeing off initially on No. 10. He came in under par on No. 15 and on No. 17. He stayed consistent after making the turn, carding six more pars, including each of his last-three holes, while adding his third birdie of the closing 18 on the par-3, 165-yard No. 6.
Ben Carroll also wrapped up his day with a 7-over 77-74—151, tying for 51st. Not wasting any time, he parred right away on the par-4, 415-yard No. 10, then traded pars and bogies for the next seven holes. The last par of that series, on No. 17, was the first of five-consecutive, through No. 3, before he added two more – on No. 5 and No. 9 – during the front nine action. He also dropped in another birdie, on No. 6.
He opened his next round with consecutive pars. He landed three more in his next-five holes, which also included his first birdie of the second 18 holes on No. 15. He made the turn and was Even the rest of his round. A bogey on No. 2 was nullified by a day-closing birdie on the par-4, 387-yard No. 9 but he posted Even scores the rest of the way to cap the 2-over par 74.
Consistency was the word of the day for
Griffin Tarver, who posted a 77-77—154 (+10) as the third Buccaneers play to complete all 36 holes. His first go-around on the course did not start well but he managed a birdie on No. 17 and five pars before teeing off on No. 1 where he continued his streak with two more pars. He added his final birdie of the first round on the par-3, 180-yard No. 3 and joined Willis with an eagle on No. 8.
The No. 11 hole, his starting point, led off with a birdie on the second trip around the course on the par-5, 555-yarder. After back-to-back bogies, he hit another birdie on the par-4, 482-yard No. 14, and added another three pars through 18. On the front nine, he parred six of the nine holes and closed his opening day play with another on No. 10.
OH SO CLOSE TO BEING DONE
Caleb Loudin and
Colin Trahan each have one hole remaining before they can move into third-round action. Loudin has carded an 81-73—154 (+15) thus far, leaving just No. 11 empty on his scorecard. His first round included four pars among his first-seven holes but he would not find another until the par-4, 420-yard No. 4. He continued the lucky streak for the Bucs on No. 8, tallying his only birdie of the round, and contributed another pair of pars on No. 9 and No. 10 to help close the round strongly.
He lowered his scores during the second 18, rattling off five-consecutive pars from No. 13 through No. 17, after starting on No. 12. He added four others on the front and a second-straight birdie on No. 8, giving himself a better score during his second time seeing the course.
Trahan owns an 83-74—157 (+18) thus far, also with No. 11 to finish in round two. His first 18 featured a pair of birdies, on No. 18 and No. 6, while he mixed in eight pars before beginning the next round. Seeing the course just hours earlier did him wonders, as he's on pace for a lower second-round score. He had two birdies among his first-three holes, on the par-3, 200-yard No. 13 and No. 15, as well as four pars through No. 18. With three pars-in-a-row in his pocket headed to No. 1, he added two more to start, extending that span to five straight. He earned two more plus a final birdie on No. 7 before play was suspended.
