CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern appeared on its way to a much-needed win in its quest for a berth in the Big South Tournament before Longwood stunned the Bucs with a late goal in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at the CSU Soccer Field.
The tie likely puts an end to CSU's hopes for a berth in the Big South Tournament. The Bucs are in sixth place with 11 points, trailing Campbell (17), USC Upstate (15) and Radford, Gardner-Webb and High Point (13 each).Â
All five of those teams play Saturday night, and CSU needs help to stay alive heading into Wednesday's regular season finale at Winthrop.
The Bucs (5-8-3, 3-3-2 Big South) ended nearly 88 minutes of scoreless soccer when
Fiama Hidalgo headed in an
Erin Rush corner kick for her third goal of the season. But before CSU could celebrate what seemed to be the game winner, the Lancers struck back 30 seconds later on a goal by Savannah Noll to create the draw.
While the majority of the game saw few scoring chances, the same can't be said of the final five minutes. The Bucs fired off three shots in a span of 35 seconds in the 86th minute, and another by
Daniela Contreras set up the goal on the corner.
CSU held a 17-9 advantage in shots, taking 11 in the second half, with
Jenea Knight leading the way with five. The Bucs' defense limited Longwood to two shots on goal, with
Sara Curtis saving the first one, and Sadie Kerns had three saves for the Lancers.
