ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern was unable to find the back of the net despite firing 24 shots in a 0-0 draw at Winthrop that eliminated the Bucs from Big South postseason contention.
CSU finished the campaign with a record of 5-8-4 overall and 3-3-3 in the Big South. With 12 points, the Bucs placed sixth in the final standings with the top four advancing to the conference tournament.
The Bucs kept the pressure on all night, especially in the second half when they took 17 shots including six in a span of just three minutes beginning with 25 minutes remaining in the game. CSU also fired four shots in the final nine minutes in an attempt to secure the goal that would keep its playoff hopes alive.
Several of CSU's shots produced outstanding scoring opportunities. In the 42nd minute, a shot by
Sam Carlson hit the right post. In the opening stages of the second half, the Bucs caught Winthrop keeper Izzy Giarrizzi out of position but the Eagle defense recovered to stop a
Daniela Contreras shot.
While the Bucs were peppering the Winthrop end, the CSU defense limited Winthrop to eight shots with three on target that were stopped by
Sara Curtis, who recorded her sixth shutout of the year.
Jenea Knight led CSU with six shots, followed by Contreras with four and
Reese Beggs and
Elin Persson with three.
