Bucs fall in overtime heartbreaker in Big South opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ashley Finn scored with the only shot in overtime Saturday afternoon to lead visiting USC Upstate past Charleston Southern in the conference opener for both squads.

CSU had a 19-7 advantage in shots, 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and took 10 corner kicks compared to just two for the Spartans. The Bucs, however, were unable to capitalize on their chances.

The Bucs played an attack-minded match, with six different players having multiple shots. Daniela Contreras led CSU with five shots, while Karly Livingston had three attempts, all on target. Upstate's Cora Brendle made seven saves in the win, while Jenna Moran had a pair of saves in net for the Bucs.

CSU's best chance came near the end of regulation, when a corner kick was deflected to Kayla Reese, but Brendle made a top-notch save to keep the game scoreless at the time. Finn scored the match-winning goal less than five minutes later.
