BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Charleston Southern Volleyball fell in three hard-fought sets Thursday night to Campbell by a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) score in Big South action from Gore Arena.
Just as they had all year for the Camels (6-1, 6-1 Big South), Lailah Green (13 kills) and Preseason Player of the Year Sarah Colla (11 kills) paced a balanced, high-powered attack past Charleston Southern (4-1, 4-1 Big South) who was making their return to the court after a three-week break.
Dayana Chara (nine kills) and
Peyton Thompson (eight kills) paced the Buccaneer attack and
Paige Reagor had six blocks, but the Camels hit .223 on the night while holding CSU to just .093 to snap the Bucs' perfect start to the 2021 season.
First Set
- Charleston Southern came out of the gate fast taking a 3-0 lead, the largest either side would have until late in the set
- Campbell then forced nine Buccaneer errors on their way to a first set win thanks to four kills from Lailah Green
- Peyton Thompson paced the Bucs with a trio of kills but the team hit below .000
Second Set
- Campbell's trio of Chloe Cook, Sarah Colla and Lailah Green paced the Camels to a second set win hitting .225 as a team
- CSU had 4 blocks in the second including a pair as part of a 5-1 run to being it back to 14-11
- Campbell would also use three service aces, including the set clincher to take the second by a 25-20 score
- Dayana Chara had five of her nine kills to lead the Bucs
Third Set
- Campbell hit .250 in the final set overcoming a late deficit as the trio of Green, Colla and Cook all finished with nine-plus kills on the night
- Trailing 19-15, Campbell used an 8-0 run to take a 23-19 lead before closing out the set and match
- The Bucs had a match-high 11 kills in the final set at hit .171 but it wasn't enough to overcome the high-powered Camels
