Bucs open homestand with sweep of Radford

CHARLESTON, S.C.Peyton Thompson had a match-high 18 kills Saturday afternoon, leading Charleston to a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-22, 25-22) of visiting Radford inside Buccaneer Fieldhouse.

Gabrielle Naniseni added nine kills for CSU, while Kaileigh Ammons, Ella Lochbiler and Indigo Young each added at least five kills in a balanced secondary attack behind Thompson. Emma Minnick had 36 assists, her second straight match with over 35 assists, while Ashleigh Holweger led the backline with 20 digs. Three different Bucs had two service aces.

CSU took control of the first set with a 9-2 run midway through the set, highlighted by an Abigail Breeden ace, a pair of kills from Naniseni and two blocks for the Buccaneers. Four of Naniseni's nine kills came in the opening set, while Radford had a negative hitting percentage in a 25-15 set win for the Bucs.

Radford started the second set on better footing and led for stretches before the Bucs rallied. CSU had a three-point run late in the set, highlighted by a pair of kills by Thompson, to break a 20-all deadlock. Four of the Bucs' last five points in the set came off the arm of Thompson, who had nine kills and a .444 hitting percentage in the set to lead CSU to a 25-22 set win.

The Bucs used a 13-4 run early in the third set to put their mark on the match. CSU took advantage of Radford's miscues early in the set, as the Highlanders had three attack errors while the Bucs had a pair of service during the run. Radford made a run to cut the Buccaneer lead to three, but back-to-back kills from Thompson followed by a Holweger service ace got the Bucs back on track. CSU closed out the match, 25-22, completing the sweep of the Highlanders.
