Balanced attack leads VolleyBucs to sweep over Presbyterian

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Three different Charleston Southern players recorded double-digit kills Tuesday evening, led by Peyton Thompson with 19, as the Bucs swept Presbyterian (26-24, 25-21, 25-20) inside Buccaneer Fieldhouse.

Indigo Young and Kaileigh Ammons had career-high nights of 16 and 11 kills, respectively, while Emma Minnick had 43 assists in the three-set sweep. Ashleigh Holweger had a career-high 28 digs for the Bucs, who hit .302 as a team while limiting Presbyterian to a .184 hitting percentage.

Neither team got into a groove early in the first set until a 7-2 CSU run put the Bucs in front, 13-8. Charleston Southern had three aces during the lengthy run. Presbyterian came back to tie the match at 20-all, but kills by Ammons, Thompson and Young closed out a 26-24 opening-set win for the Bucs.

The Bucs and Blue Hose traded early runs to begin the second set before a 4-1 run put CSU in front, 10-7. Presbyterian came back to take the lead in the later stages of the set, 17-16 before a 6-1 Buccaneer run, highlighted by a pair of Ammons kills and a block assist from Ammons and Ella Lochbiler put CSU ahead, 24-19. Ammons closed the second set with a kill to give the Bucs a two-set advantage.

Presbyterian took six of the first seven points to begin the third set before a Buccaneer timeout stalled the Blue Hose's momentum. CSU responded with a 7-1 run, capped by a Young kill, to take a two-point lead, before the teams exchanged points. A 5-1 run, which featured three kills by Thompson, pushed the Buccaneer lead to five, which Presbyterian never recovered from. PC got within three points multiple times late in the set, buy kills by Thompson and Ammons closed out a home sweep for CSU.
