Bucs drop Friday road match to Radford

RADFORD, Va. – Charleston Southern had the match leaders in kills, assists and digs Friday evening, but Radford defeated the Bucs in three sets (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) inside the Dedmon Center.

Peyton Thompson led all players with 10 kills in the match, while Indigo Young had six kills and Kaileigh Ammons added five. Emma Minnick had a match-high 22 assists and Ashleigh Holweger led all players with 12 digs.

Charleston Southern hung around early in the first set before a lengthy Radford scoring run put the Highlanders in control for the set. Thompson and Ammons each had a pair of kills in the set, but errors proved costly for CSU and Radford took advantage on its way to a 25-11 win in the opener

The Bucs got off to a strong start in the second set by taking seven of the first nine points, including three kills by Thompson. From there, however, Radford clawed its way back into the set and took the lead midway through, never relinquishing it. A Thompson kill cut the CSU deficit to one, 13-12, before Radford went on a 6-0 run that killed any momentum the Bucs had. CSU cut that deficit down to two on multiple occasions late in the set with kills by Thompson and Young, but Radford closed on a 5-1 run to take the second frame, 25-19. Young had five of her six kills in the set, while six of Thompson's match-high 10 kills were in the middle set.

Radford jumped out to an early lead in the third set and though the Bucs were able to trim the deficit to three points on multiple occasions, the Highlanders never lost the lead in the final set. Radford took advantage of CSU attack errors throughout the middle of the set and closed out the match with a 25-15 win in the third.
