VolleyBucs fall to Spartans to close weekend road trip

SPARTANBURG, S.C.Peyton Thompson and Indigo Young combined for 15 kills Saturday afternoon, but Charleston Southern was swept by USC Upstate (25-14, 25-17, 25-16) inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

Thompson had a match-high nine kills in the setback, while Emma Minnick had 22 assists for the Bucs. Young added six kills and Ashleigh Holweger had a match-leading 12 digs.

CSU was able to keep within three for most of the first set until Upstate closed on a 10-2 run to take the opener, 25-14. The Spartans continued their momentum into the second set, building a six-point lead that the Bucs were unable to overcome. CSU never got close than five after Upstate built its lead and found itself facing a 2-0 deficit heading into the third set.

The Buccaneers led for most of the early stages of the third set, using three Thompson kills and taking advantage of four early Spartan attack errors to build a four-point lead, 11-7. Upstate followed that with a seven-point run to take a three-point lead, 14-11. Charleston Southern used a Thompson kill to cut the deficit to one, but the Spartans took 10 of the last 12 points to clinch its fifth win in the last six matches.
