Buccaneers drop Big South contest to Winthrop

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Winthrop scored three times in the first half and went on to a 4-1 win over Charleston Southern in a Big South contest on Wednesday at the CSU Soccer Field.

Zari Hayes scored for the Buccaneers (3-6-2, 0-2-2 Big South) in the early stages of the second half. Jazmin Gonzalez made six saves in goal.

How It Happened
•    Winthrop got on the board in the 19th minute on a goal by Gabi Hull assisted by Natalie Royaards.
•    Three minutes later, Megan Loveland converted a penalty kick for the first of her two goals in the game.
•    The Eagles completed a seven-minute stretch with three goals when Allie Thomas put a shot from a tough angle right of the goal past Gonzalez.
•    Hayes moved into a tie for the team lead with Kylie Doster when she scored her third goal of the season in the 50th minute. Bri Robinson had her team-best fourth assist.
•    Loveland finished the scoring in the 58th minute when she scored off an assist by Thomas.

Inside the Numbers
•    Winthrop had a 17-10 lead in the shots and 10-6 on goal. The Bucs had seven corner, one more than the Eagles.
•    Kayla Reese led CSU with four shots, including three on target, and six different Bucs each had one.
•    Ashlynn Harris played the first 84 minutes in goal for Winthrop and had four saves. Amanda Esposito made one save in six minutes in relief.

News and Notes
•    Gonzalez took over sole possession of ninth in school history with 145 career saves. She needs seven to pass Liz-Amanda Brown for eighth.
•    Wednesday's game was the fourth in Big South play for the Bucs and first that didn't go into overtime.
•    In addition to Gonzalez, Kayla Robinson, Maddie Reilly and Kylie Doster played the full 90 minutes.
