Robinson, Kirby score late to produce 2-2 deadlock with Longwood

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Siera Kirby scored her first career goal in the waning moments of regulation to cap a frantic 15 minutes of action in Charleston Southern's 2-2 tie against Longwood in a Big South contest at the CSU Soccer Field.

The Buccaneers (4-1-2, 1-0-1 Big South) continued their hot start by twice rallying from a one-goal deficit to gain the draw, with Kayla Robinson scoring the first CSU goal at the 75-minute mark to deadlock the contest at 1. Longwood is now 2-4-3 overall and 0-0-2 in conference play.

How It Happened

  • Longwood held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but the Bucs were able to answer both times
  • The Lancers scored first with 1:11 left in the first half on a goal by Madison Lockamy off an assist by Danielle Toone.
  • It stayed that way until Sidney Doherty found Robinson, who launched a hard shot that Madison Van Dyke got a hand on but could not stop from entering the top right corner of the goal.
  • Just over four minutes later, Longwood was awarded a free kick from just outside the  box and Kelly Almeida converted to give the Lancers a 2-1 edge.
  • With time ebbing away in regulation, Taylor Francis directed a perfect cross through the box to Kirby, who beat Van Dyke to her right to tie it up.
  • Both teams had four shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods, with CSU putting three on target in the second stanza, but neither side could break the tie.

Inside the Numbers

  • Longwood held an 18-13 advantage in shots, but the Bucs had more shots on goal by a 10-6 margin.
  • CSU took the only five corner kicks of the contest.
  • Robinson had four shots including three on goal. The sophomore forward has become a sparkplug for the CSU offense with four shots in each of the last three games.
  • Alyssa Dellacqua finished with four saves, and Van Dyke had eight for the Lancers.
  • In a physical contest, Longwood was whistled for 17 fouls to 11 for the Bucs.

News and Notes

  • This marks only the second time in school history and first since 1996 that the Bucs have only one loss through their first seven games.
  • Robinson's goal was her second of the season, tying her for the team lead with Riley Rumbley, who had a pair in Wednesday's win at Presbyterian.
  • Doherty recorded her second assist of the year and sixth of her career. She also had two shots on goal against the Lancers.
  • Kirby became the fourth freshman to score a goal this season, joining Rumbley, Erin Rush and Emily Kifer.
  • Of the eight Bucs who have scored a goal, only Peyton Motley had one entering the 2018 campaign.
  • CSU snapped a seven-game losing streak against Longwood.
