Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern picked up a five-set win over Presbyterian in a Big South match on Saturday at the Buc Dome, 28-30, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11.
CSU improves to 7-11, 2-2 following the win, while Presbyterian falls to 4-12, 1-3 with the loss. Brooke Monssen led the Bucs offensively with 16 kills and Madison Martin led the defensive effort with 25 digs.
Charleston Southern took an early 10-8 lead in the first set on a ball handling error by PC's Jaclyn Brewington. The Blue Hose then won five straight points to take a 13-10 lead. Presbyterian led 20-17 before the Bucs won five straight points to take a 21-20 lead on back-to-back kills by Monssen. The teams traded points until Kylie Klein had a kill to give CSU a 28-27 lead. The Blue Hose won the next three points to close the first set.
CSU took a 12-10 lead in the second set following a service ace by Madison Martin. The lead for the Bucs grew to 18-11 after an attack error by Caroline Henderson. Presbyterian closed the score to 21-18 following a kill by Sydney De Jong. Charleston Southern then won four of the next six points and a kill by Klein gave CSU the set and tied the match 1-1.
The Blue Hose got off to a fast start in the third set and led 10-5. The Bucs won six straight points and led 11-10 after a service ace by Macey LaPorte. PC took a 23-21 lead following an attack error by Monssen. CSU then closed the set by winning four straight points and back-to-back kills by Kalysia Bates gave the Bucs a 2-1 lead.
Presbyterian bounced back in the fourth set and led 10-4 after a kill by Erin Eulitz. The lead for the Blue Hose grew to 15-12 following a kill by Allie Wright. PC took a 19-14 lead, but then saw its advantage dwindle to 22-20. Presbyterian won the next three points to close set and tie the match 2-2.
The Blue Hose had a 9-6 lead in the fifth set after a kill by Henderson. Charleston Southern then won five straight points behind strong serving from Macey LaPorte to give the Bucs an 11-9 lead. Presbyterian cut the lead to 12-11 following a kill by Wright. CSU then won the next three points to close the set and win the match.
