CSU picks up Big South win at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Charleston Southern picked up a four set win over Gardner-Webb in a Big South match on Friday at Paul Porter Arena, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21.

CSU improves to 8-13, 3-4 on the season following the win, while the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 7-14, 1-7 with the loss. Kylie Klein and Addison Kaderli led the Bucs with 14 kills each and Madison Martin led the defensive efforts with 28 digs.

Charleston Southern jumped to an early lead in the first set and led 12-7 after an attack error by Gardner-Webb. The Bucs led 16-11 following a kill by Kalysia Bates. CSU was in front 19-16 when back-to-back kills by Klein sparked a run in which the Bucs won six of the next seven points to close the first set.

Gardner-Webb took an 8-3 lead in set two, but CSU won six out of seven points again to knot the set at 9-9. The Runnin' Bulldogs held a 16-12 lead following a service ace by Nicole Celarek. An attack error by the Bucs gave GWU a 19-15 lead. CSU then won four straight points and a kill by Brooke Monssen tied the set 19-19. A back-and-forth conclusion saw the Runnin' Bulldogs clinch the set and tie the match on a kill by Maria Emmick.

CSU led the third set 11-7 after a kill by Klein. An attack error by Gardner-Webb gave the Bucs a 16-12 lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs then scored five straight points to take a 17-16 lead. Charleston Southern scored four in a row and a service ace by Macey LaPorte put the Bucs in front 20-17.  A kill by Rachel Smith closed the scoring in the third set and gave CSU a 2-1 lead.

A tight start to the fourth set had Charleston Southern ahead 10-7 following another kill by Smith. Kaderli had a kill to give CSU a 14-12 lead, but the Runnin' Bulldogs took a 20-19 lead on a service ace by Celarek. The Bucs scored six of the final seven points to win the match on a kill by Klein.
