Buccaneers' tournament run ends in the Big South Championship Quarterfinal

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Charleston Southern's Big South Women's Basketball Championship run ended in the Quarterfinal round as the No. 7 Buccaneers fell to the No. 2 Liberty Flames on Friday night in Kimmel Arena, 68-53.

Alyssa Mann scored 13 points, while Shauntavia Dobson scored 11 points, including three second half three-pointers, for the Buccaneers (14-17) on the night, but CSU was unable to offset Liberty's size advantage in the paint as the Flames utilized a 55-22 rebounding advantage in taking the win.

Mann closed out her CSU career going 5-for-12 from the floor and finished with two assists and a steal in 40 minutes action on the court. The senior guard kept the Bucs in the game in the first half with seven early points as CSU trailed 27-21 at the break.

Liberty (19-11) was paced by Catherine Kearney's double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds as the Flames advance to Saturday's semifinal round. Sadaila Ellis added 11 points, while Ashley Rininger had six points and nine rebounds off the bench in the win.

Liberty jumped out to the double-digit lead in the first quarter with the Flames taking the 15-4 lead at the 2:07 mark in the period following a Kearney free throw. The Bucs scored the final four points of the quarter with Ke'Asia Jackson converting a pair of free throws and Alecia Hardy scoring on the fast break jumper in the paint as CSU trailed 15-8 at the end of the period.

The Bucs scored the first seven points of the second quarter continuing their 11-0 run as Mann got the hot hand connecting on a three-pointer at the 7:28 mark before hitting a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 15-15. The Bucs kept the game within one possession at 20-19 following Mann jumper at the 4:43 mark, before Liberty stretched the lead back out before the break as the Flames took the 27-21 lead at the half.

Liberty's lead reached double-digits at 32-21 following a three-pointer from Brooke Alexander and the Flames led by as many as 19 in the third quarter. Dobson converted a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the CSU deficit down to 52-36.

Liberty's lead reached 23 points following a pair of Ellis free throws at the 5:50 mark in the fourth quarter. CSU mounted a late comeback with Dobson connecting on another three-pointer while Mann and Rachel Burns both had layups, but the Bucs were unable to close the gap in falling to the Flames, 68-53.
