CHARLESTON, S.C. – St. John's starter Chris Kalica bounced back from a three-run first inning hole to hold Charleston Southern scoreless over the next six innings as the Red Storm rallied for a 9-4 win on Friday night at CSU Ballpark.
Kalica (WP, 1-0) retired 16 straight Bucs after recoding his first out and Jarred Mederos hit a 2-run home run for St. John's in the win.
CSU falls to 4-3 overall, while St. John's improves to 5-3.
The Red Storm scored four times in the second inning to quickly retake the lead after falling behind 3-0. CSU starter Andrew Tomasovich (LP, 2-1) surrendered 11 hits and seven earned runs, but gave up three runs in the second after Bucs' centerfielder Brandon Burris lost a pop up in the lights in the second inning. Tomasovich did finish with 10 strikeouts.
CSU jumped to a 3-0 lead in its opening at-bat. Nate Blanchard drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI double from Chase Hannifin. The Bucs added runs on an RBI single from Chase Shelton and a double from Andrew Widell.
St. John's Alex Caruso was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Michael Donido added a 3-for-4 night with three RBI.
First baseman Chase Shelton was 2-for-5 for CSU and had an RBI single.
Charleston Southern faces North Florida tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m.
