ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop completed the weekend sweep over Charleston Southern on Sunday by a final score of 5-4 needing extra innings to finish the comeback.
The Bucs were the first team to score as a
Chandler Tuupo sacrifice fly brought
Kain Collins home in the third for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth, with the bases loaded,
Lucas Pringle doubled to right center which allowed all three runners to cross home and push the advantage to 4-0.
Winthrop began to cut into their deficit in the sixth off a fielder's choice groundout that brought a runner home from third. In the seventh, they had a solo home run, bringing the score to 4-2. In the eighth, they tied the game off a two-run homer. They got their first lead of the day in the tenth off a sacrifice fly to right field for the 5-4 win.
Matt Gallant started on the mound for the Bucs and threw the first 6.1 innings. He allowed two earned runs to go with five hits and one hit batter while allowing no bases on balls and struck out five batters.
Aydan Smith tossed 1.1 frames allowing two earned runs followed by
Hayden Henry getting the final 1.2, allowing one earned run and receiving the loss.
Offensively, Collins and
Caden Wolfley lead the team with two hits while Pringle and
Nathan Martinez each added two. Additionally, they drew three walks and a hit by pitch.
Charleston Southern is off from a midweek as they will begin to prepare for their weekend series instead. The Bucs will be playing host to Presbyterian with the series to be played from Thursday-Saturday as Sunday this weekend is Easter.
