CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern' home winning streak ended at four matches as the Buccaneers fell to visiting Longwood on Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference play, 2-0.
Off the field prior to and after the game, CSU Head Coach Eric Terrill and the Buccaneers honored alum and former goalkeeper Amy Arroyo who is currently battling with breast cancer.
"It was a great day overall," said Terrill. "Everyone was out sporting their pink gear. Willie Jewell's came out and really supported us and our kids did a great job with everything. Christi (Rostin) and Jennifer (Wilson) did a great job organizing and helping us out. It was good to see a lot of alumni back today. Today just showed all of the support of the Charleston Southern community and our business partners and their support for Amy."
CSU Soccer is continuing to sell Pink CSU Soccer T-Shirts with proceeds from all sales going toward Amy Arroyo. For more information on how to purchase a t-shirt or donate, contact the CSU Soccer Office.
Amanda Spencer scored both goals for the Lancers in the match as CSU struggled to find momentum in their third contest over the last four games.
"We knew today was going to be tough," said Terrill. "Three games in four days is hard on everyone, but I thought we played really well in the first 30 minutes of the game. We had some opportunities, but just couldn't convert. Give Longwood credit, they came in and finished their shots."
Charleston Southern falls to 6-6-2, 3-4 in Big South Conference play on the season with the loss, while the Lancers improve to 8-5-2, 4-1-2 in the conference.
Jazmin Gonzalez recorded seven saves in goal for the Bucs in the loss, while Longwood's Maria Kirby stopped all nine CSU shots on goal in recording her sixth shutout of the season.
Charleston Southern nearly jumped out ahead of the Lancers early as Sidney Doherty had a breakaway opportunity against Kirby in the 17th minute. Catching Kirby out in the top of the box, Doherty lifted the ball over her head and bounced it toward the goal, but the shot deflected off the right post and the Lancers' defense cleared it to keep the Bucs off the board.
Longwood countered with several opportunities in the box over the next 10 minutes with CSU's defense blocking three shots in less than a minute, while Gonzalez made a pair of saves off of shots by Longwood's Jessica O'Bryant and Spencer.
Spencer found the mark at the 28:59 mark following up a rebound off the right post with a shot tucked inside the left post from four yards out to give Longwood the 1-0 lead.
The Longwood forward added her second goal of the contest at the 52:13 mark off the assist from Amber Hodges to add insurance to the Lancers' lead.
CSU rallied back late as Anna Sells put three shots on goal over the final 20 minutes. The first two shots were saved on diving stops from Kirby, while Sells' header at the 88:49 mark was deflected out as Longwood held on for the win.
CSU returns to the road on Wednesday as the Buccaneers travel to High Point, N.C. to take on the Panthers in Big South action. Kickoff on the Big South Network is set for 7 p.m.
