CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern clinched at least a share of the 2014 Big South Conference regular season title and extended their winning streak to 13 matches in a row on Wednesday afternoon on Senior Day as the #73-ranked Buccaneers topped visiting Coastal Carolina at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, 6-1.
The win over the Chanticleers improves the Buccaneers record to 14-3 overall on the season, 8-0 in Big South Conference play with one match to go this weekend as CSU travels to Campbell. CSU remains the only undefeated team in the Big South on the season and can clinch the regular season title outright with a win over the Camels at the Nisbet Tennis Center. First serve in doubles play between the Bucs and Camels is set for 2 p.m.
The Buccaneers extended their winning streak to 13 victories in a row following the win over the Chanticleers in their first match since being ranked in the latest ITA Division Division I poll released on April 9th.
Alexandra Walters and Alia Nour were both perfect in their final matches at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex as Walters defeated Romane Delay on court no. 3, 6-1, 6-1, while Nour topped Amanda Malatek on court no. 6, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (7-5).
Charleston Southern opened up the match against the Chanticleers sweeping all three doubles matches to take the opening point.
Yvonne Hubler and Walters opened up the match with an 8-2 win over Honami Yazawa and Kourtney Kowal on court no. 1. Nour and Mi'Kola Cooper followed shortly after with an 8-2 win on court no. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Bucs. Marketa Placha and Nicolin Luecke completed the CSU sweep over the Chants with an 8-5 win on court no. 3 over Dominique De Wit and Libby Scott, sending the match into singles play.
Singles action saw Walters the first one off the court as the Adelaide, Australia native defeated Delay in straight sets to push the Bucs lead to 2-0. Hubler followed with a win over Yazawa on court no. 2, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 to put CSU on the brink of clinching the win.
Luecke clinched the match win for the Buccaneers on the afternoon in topping Kowal on court no. 4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Placha finished shortly after with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Libby Scott on court no. 1 to run the CSU margin to 5-0.
Marie Babayan put the first point on the board for the Chanticleers on court no. 5, topping Cooper in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Nour finished out the match with a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (7-5) victory over Malatek on court no. 6 to close out the CSU victory.
