CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern swept all three doubles matches and Yvonne Hubler clinched match point as the Buccaneers opened the home portion of their 2014 season with a 6-1 victory over South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon.
The Buccaneers improve to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 inside the friendly confines of the Buccaneer Tennis Complex as Marketa Placha, Gabriela Srodowski, Hubler, Alexandra Walters and Alia Nour all picked up singles wins on the afternoon to snap the three match skid.
CSU opened the match picking up wins on courts 1, 2 and 3 in doubles play to take the first point of the afternoon.
Walters and Hubler teamed up to top S.C. State's no. 1 doubles team of Klara Dohanlova and Intissar Rassif 8-4, while Placha and Luecke defeated Oleksandra Filippova and Nynke Van Der Goot on court no. 3, 8-3. In the toughest match of the round, Nour and Mi'Kola Cooper defeated Victoria Khatcei and Marketa Marcanikova 7-6 (7-1) to complete the sweep.
Placha opened up singles action with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court no. 1 against Filippova and Srodowski followed up with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Dakota Brown on court no. 6. Hubler finished shortly afterward clinching the match win for the Bucs with a 6-3, 6-1win on court no. 2 over Dohanlova.
Walters followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Khatcei on court no. 3, before Rassif put the Bulldogs on the board with a win on court no. 4 over Luecke. Rassif won the match in three sets, picking up the 6-3, 2-6 (10-8) victory to put the score at 5-1.
Nour finished up the afternoon with a 6-3, 7-5 win on court no. 5 to close out the afternoon over Marcanikova.
The Buccaneers are back in action next Saturday as CSU hosts Wofford on February 22nd. Charleston Southern and the Terriers open up doubles action at 1 p.m.
