Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. - Lydia Frierson's first collegiate goal and Anna Sells' 10th goal of the season was not enough for Charleston Southern on Wednesday night as the Buccaneers fell in Big South Conference play to host Winthrop, 3-2.
Frierson scored her first career collegiate goal in the 67th minute of the match as the freshman midfielder blocked the failed clearance attempted by Winthrop goalkeeper Amelia Henderson. Frierson outraced Henderson to the loose ball and slid the shot in from five yards out to halve the WU lead to 2-1 in a fast-paced second half that at one point saw the teams combine for three goals over a span of nine minutes.
Sells' 10th goal of the season answered Winthrop's Samantha Prytulak in the 76th minute, but the CSU were unable to put in the tying goal to force overtime in falling on the road in Big South play.
Charleston Southern falls to 5-9-1, 1-4-1 in conference action with the loss, while Winthrop improves to 6-6-1, 2-3-1 in Big South play.
Krystyna Freda put the Eagles on the board in the 14th minute of the match as she collected a free ball inside the CSU box and tapped it into the bottom right corner of the net. Her goal put Winthrop ahead early, 1-0, at the 13:33 mark.
The one goal advantage would stand until the third minute of the second half as the Eagles doubled their lead courtesy of Eden Ralph's first goal of the season as she intercepted the clearance from the corner kick. Her shot from 18 yards out flew into the net at the 47:29 mark to double-up Winthrop's lead, 2-0.
The Bucs answered in the 67th minute as Frierson scored her first collegiate goal, sparking off a span of three goals in nine minutes as the Eagles managed to hold on to the lead.
Frierson's goal came at the 66:25 mark, but Prytulak answered eight minutes later off the assist from Grace Radler to put the score at 3-1 Winthrop at the 74:38 mark.
Not to be outdone, Sells followed up with her 10th goal of the season less than a minute later as the CSU sophomore forward headed the free kick from Emma Faubert into the side net at the 75:14 mark to keep the one goal margin intact.
CSU's final shot came with just under four minutes to play as Gina Cox launched an attempt, but her shot sailed wide as the Bucs were unable to complete the comeback in falling to the Eagles.
Caitlin Cody recorded five saves for the Bucs inside the net in the loss, while Henderson stopped three CSU shots in picking up the conference win.
Faubert and Sells continue their march in the CSU record books as Faubert moved into a three-way tie for 14th overall with her ninth career assist in the match. Sells moved into sole possession of 18th in goals scored and 23rd in points with her 13th career goal.
Charleston Southern remains on the road this weekend as the Bucs make the trip to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood University in Big South action on Saturday. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Lancers at the Athletics Complex is set for 2 p.m.
