Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. - Anna Sells made her first collegiate goal count, putting in the go-ahead score in the 80th minute of the match and she added an insurance goal six minutes later as the Buccaneers improved to 3-0 on their home stand with the 4-2 win over Jacksonville State on Sunday afternoon.
Toni Lashley added her fourth goal of the season and Chelsea Frankeny scored for the second time in as many games, but the true star of the match was the freshman forward as Sells led the team with five shots and three shots on goal, and added an assist in the win.
"Overall we had a great performance today," commented head coach Eric Terrill on the Bucs win. "Our chemistry is continuing to build. We've seen some nice chemistry between Chelsea Phillips and Toni Lashley. But today we really saw some nice interplay between Chelsea Frankeny and Anna Sells. They played really well together today."
Charleston Southern improves to 3-1 overall on the 2013 season and returns to the road next Sunday as the Buccaneers travel to local rival The Citadel in search of their first road win of the year. Kickoff between the Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m.
With CSU's pair of wins over Canisius and Jacksonville State, Charleston Southern won the Nike Tournament as The Citadel and Canisius tied their match this afternoon, 1-1. CSU went 2-0 on the weekend, The Citadel 1-0-1, Canisius 0-1-1 and Jacksonville State 0-2.
The Buccaneers peppered the net early and often in the match, racking up 25 shots and 12 shots on goal in the match and JSU goalkeeper Taylor Hammond nearly proved up to the task with eight saves, but was unable to make the late stops to send the match into overtime. Her counterpart in the goal, Dana McLaughlin, picked up her third win of the year, as the CSU freshman stopped four JSU shots in the winning effort.
"Ashley Lowdermilk has been great for us in the middle," commented Terrill on the overall team effort on the weekend. "The defense has done a good job of pacing us forward and she has played well. We have a lot of young players building that chemistry together and I'm excited to see where it goes from here. Ultimately, it is about us and how we develop and getting ready for conference play. We have some talented players and some injuries to work through defensively. But we are working hard and getting better every day."
Charleston Southern opened the scoring in 16th minute of the match as Toni Lashley and Chelsea Phillips continued to build off of their early season connection as Phillips crossed the ball in from the left corner. The ball deflected off the body of Lashley and past Hammond, into the net for the first point of the game as the Bucs took the 1-0 lead at the 15:10 mark.
Twenty minutes later, CSU struck again this time with Frankeny and Sells finding each other on the field. Sells tapped the ball past the defense on the right side of the box and Frankeny was able to poke the ball away from the defender and slid it past the goalkeeper into the bottom left corner to give the Bucs the 2-0 lead with 34:09 on the clock.
The Gamecocks charged back before the half as Kelsey Bright took one back for the Gamecocks at the 37:01 mark off the assist from Kristen Hoo. Hoo's cross into the box went into the midst of traffic and the collision cleared a path for Bright to blast the ball through the opening and into the net to cut the Bucs lead in half.
The Buccaneers nearly increased their lead several times before the halftime break as Ashley Lowdermilk's shot attempt bounced off the cross bar at the 40:04 mark and Frankeny's shot hit the right post from 10 yards out, while Sells nearly had her first collegiate goal in a one-on-one situation that Hammond was able to swat away as the teams ended the first half with the Bucs holding the 2-1 advantage.
Jackie Rush evened the score at the 66:02 mark in the second half after receiving the cross from Katt Dowd. Her one-time attempt connected into the back of the net from 12 yards out to even the score at 2-2.
Heading into the final 15 minutes with both teams tiring in the sweltering Charleston early afternoon heat, Sells took the long pass from Emma Faubert and beat the defender into the box, sliding the ball away from the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal. The score, her first of her collegiate career, came at the 79:56 mark to give the Bucs the lead for good.
"I was super excited and couldn't believe I did it [scored first collegiate goal]," Sells had to say about the game-winning goal. "It put the team ahead and I was just really happy about it. I can't really explain it [scoring twice in one game]. I'm just really happy. I don't really have the words to describe it. It will help us out if the fans keep coming out and supporting us, especially at a local game like at The Citadel next weekend."
With time running out in the final five minutes, Sells again found the back of the net, this time off the assist from Gina Cox. Cox carried the ball up the left wing and sent a softly arcing ball into the vicinity of the net and Sells was able to leap over the defender and direct the ball into the upper right corner for the final score of the game at the 86:37 mark.
Charleston Southern held the 25-14 shot advantage and 7-1 corner kicks advantage in the match in their third straight win of the season.
