CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Buccaneers continued their winning play
in the state of Virginia on Sunday afternoon as Charleston Southern
went 2-0 in their swing through the Old Dominion State with their
6-1 victory over Liberty University.
The Bucs won two of the three doubles matches and five of the
six singles competitions in picking up their seventh Big South
Conference win of the season.
Charleston Southern improves to 11-5 on the season, 7-1 in
conference play in 2013. Liberty falls to 10-8, 6-3 in Big South
action overall.
CSU opened up the day at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts
winning two of the three doubles matches to take the first point of
the day.
Alia Nour and Angelica Sidorenko picked up the first win of the
day, defeating Rebekah Jenkins and Nicola Wellman on court no. 1,
8-2. Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters finished soon after,
topping Jessie Boda and Brittany Yang on court no. 2, clinching the
opening point for CSU with their 8-4 victory.
The Flames picked up the final victory in doubles action on
court no. 3, as Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong topped Susita Das
and Marketa Placha, 8-7.
Moving into singles competition, Hubler topped Richard to open
the scoring and put the Bucs ahead 2-0 with the 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Walters finished soon after on court no. 4 with the 6-2, 6-4
victory over Thong. Sidorenko clinched the win for the second
consecutive day, defeating Wellman in a tough three set match, 6-2,
1-6, 6-1.
The remaining three matches all went three sets with the Bucs
pulling out victories on courts 1 and 5.
Nour and Yang split the first two sets, with each player winning
6-4. In the deciding final frame, Nour closed out the win with the
6-4 victory.
Annisha Domenech picked up the lone Liberty victory on the
afternoon, topping Das on court no. 6 in the deciding third set.
Das topped Domenech in the first set, winning 6-2, while the
Liberty athlete evened the match with the 6-2 win in the second
frame. In the final set, Domenech closed out the win with the 6-4
victory.
The final match of the day saw Placha close out the Bucs
victory, topping Jenkins on court no. 1, rallying to win the 5-7,
7-5, 10-6 victory.
Charleston Southern closes out Big South Conference action this
week as the Bucs travel to Conway, S.C. on Wednesday, April 10th,
against Coastal Carolina. First serve in doubles play is set for 2
p.m. at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.
