Bucs fall to Coastal Carolina, 1-0; Will take on Radford in Big South tournament opener

Box Score

CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern closed out the 2013 regular season on the road, falling 1-0 at the hands of Coastal Carolina in a Big South Conference match on Tuesday evening at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Complex.

The Buccaneers loss, coupled with Campbell's 2-0 loss to High Point on Tuesday, propels Charleston Southern into the 2013 Big South Conference Soccer Championships as the eight-seed in the field. CSU opens the tournament at top-seed Radford on Friday evening, with kickoff against the Highlanders set for 7 p.m.

Charleston Southern advances despite a tough loss to the host Chanticleers as the host Chants outshot the Bucs 33-14 overall on the evening. However, another great performance inside the net by Caitlin Cody (14 saves), give the Bucs reason to look forward to the upcoming tournament slate.

The Buccaneers and Chanticleers battled through a scoreless first half with Coastal Carolina out-shooting Charleston Southern 14-6 over the first 45 minutes, but the shot total was deceptive as Cody was only tested four times and made four saves in keeping the score tied heading into the halftime break.

Coastal's Fia Jonsson opened up the scoring opportunities in the third minute of the match, but her attempt at the 2:53 mark sailed wide of the mark. CSU's Allison Lewis also fired toward the net with shots in the fourth and sixth minutes of the match, but both of her attempts were deflected by the Coastal Carolina defense as the Chants allowed one shot on goal in the first half.

Kacey Kelly provided a majority of the action for the Chanticleers in the first half, firing four shots at the CSU net while Lewis had three of her own to lead the Buccaneers offense.

Coastal Carolina launched a late attack in the final five minutes of the period, sending five shots toward net as Amanda Clark, Brianna Panico, Taylor Valentine, Shelby Evans and Rylie Johnson all directed attacks toward the Buccaneers net. Cody proved up to the task though with three saves to send the teams into the break tied 0-0.

The second half opened with Emma Faubert taking the first shot on goal 50 seconds into the period, but her attempt was turned away by CCU goalkeeper Megan Spencer before the Chanticleers continued their attack at the Buccaneers net.

The Chanticleers launched five shots in the second half before Valentine found an opening at the 58:43 mark, out-racing Cody to a loose ball in the box. Her shot attempt went back into the goal for the first score of the game to put Coastal Carolina ahead 1-0.

Coastal Carolina continued to press their advantage, looking to increase their lead in the second half in launching 19 second half shots. Cody continued her standout play spanning her previous three starts in recording 10 saves in the period to keep the Chanticleers off the scoreboard.

Anna Sells looked to build on her late game heroics for the second match in a row in leading the Charleston Southern comeback attempt in the final 10 minutes. The freshman forward drilled her first shot at the 81:22 mark and sent another shot attempt at the 85:00 mark, but both attempts were turned away by the CCU defense. Sells finally put a shot on goal at the 86:31 mark, but her header attempt was corralled by Spencer to keep the shutout attempt intact.

CSU's final scoring opportunity came at the 87:35 mark on a shot by Lewis, but the senior midfielder's attempt sailed high of the mark as Coastal Carolina closed out the shutout win.
