Buccaneers host Presbyterian in Big South action on Wednesday

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern women's soccer is back in action in Big South Conference play on Wednesday afternoon as the Buccaneers welcome the Presbyterian Blue Hose to Blackbaud Stadium with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

The contest between the Bucs and the Blue Hose will be streamed live on the Big South Network, with live stats provided by the Charleston Southern Sports Information Department.

The Buccaneers boast a 3-2 record at home in the 2013 season, but have fallen in their past two home games after opening the season with three consecutive home wins, including wins over Canisius and Jacksonville State in winning the Nike Tournament. CSU currently sports a 3-6-1 record overall on the year.

After opening up Big South Conference play last weekend, Charleston Southern looks to rebound after falling on the road to Liberty 1-0, and dropping to preseason favorite Radford at Blackbaud on Saturday, 2-1.

Against Liberty, Toni Lashley had three shots and a shot on goal late for the Bucs, while Chelsea Phillips, Chloe Urig and Chelsea Frankeny also recorded shots on goal for the Buccaneers in the match, but were all turned away by Liberty's Holly Van Noord as the Flames' goalkeeper recorded her conference leading sixth shutout of the season.

Saturday against Radford saw Frankeny connect on a goal inside the first five minutes to stake Charleston Southern to the early lead, but goals by Sydney Golden and Kara Wade propelled visiting Radford to the Big South Conference win at Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders picked up the 2-1 victory.

For the season, Lashley and Frankeny lead the Buccaneers with four goals apiece, while Chelsea Phillips has three goals on the year to pace the Bucs offense. Anna Sells is close behind with a pair of scoring shots, while Allison Lewis has also connected on a goal this season.

Setting up the CSU attack, Lashley tied for the team lead with her third assist, connecting on the pass on Frankeny's goal against Radford, while Emma Faubert also has three assists on the season. Phillips is close behind with two assists as well.

Inside the goal box, freshman goalkeeper Dana McLaughlin leads the Big South Conference with 72 saves on the season in nine games' action as the CSU athlete is allowing 1.50 goals per game with a .837 save percentage. Caitlin Cody has also seen time inside the net for the Bucs, racking up 13 saves against Mercer.

Presbyterian enters the contest with a 4-4 record overall, 1-1 in Big South play following their 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville this past Saturday. The Blue Hose opened up conference action on Wednesday at Radford, falling to the Highlanders in a double-overtime thriller when Melanie Priestly connected on the golden goal with 1:02 left in the match.

Against common opponents, Presbyterian is 2-2 with wins over USC Upstate and The Citadel, while falling to Radford. Charleston Southern is 0-3.

Tori Lopez leads the way for the Blue Hose on the season with three goals, while Sara Simpson has two goals and two assists to pace the PC attack on the year. Overall, nine different players have found the back of the net for Presbyterian on the season.

Inside the goal, Jordan Broadway has seen action in six matches, allowing 0.85 goals per game, while Sydney Fontenot has been three matches with a 1.17 goals allowed average.

Last season between the Bucs and the Blue Hose, Sara Simpson's second half goal lifted host Presbyterian College over the visiting Charleston Southern Buccaneers at Edens Field at Martin Stadium.

Rebecca Hollstegge recorded her fifth goal of the season in the loss, scoring in the final second of the first half, but goals by Catie Smith and Simpson took the win for the Blue Hose.

In the preseason rankings, Charleston Southern was selected eighth overall, while Presbyterian was 11th in the poll.

The all-time standings have Charleston Southern with the 4-2 advantage over the Blue Hose, dating back to the 2007 season when the Bucs and PC first met.
