HIGH POINT, N.C. - Backed by three players who reached
double-digit kills in the contest, High Point swept visiting
Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference
play, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22.
Freshman middle blocker Meredith Parrott continued her strong
play on the weekend, adding eight kills and hitting .316 from the
floor as Charleston Southern (7-12, 2-2 BSC) split their weekend
road trip following their defeat to the Panthers (13-6, 2-1
BSC).
High Point jumped ahead in the first set, scoring the first
three points on Maddie Simpson's serve, but the Lady Bucs rallied
back behind back-to-back kills by Parrott and two consecutive kills
by Kayla Klinger as CSU knotted the match up at 5-all early in the
set. With the score tied at 8-all following a HPU service error,
the Panthers went on a 10-4 run, capped by a kill by Kristen Heldt
off the Simpson assist to give the host team the 18-12
advantage.
Siraya Windsor kept the Lady Bucs in the frame, adding a late
kill to put the set at 21-16, but a kill by Caity Farus gave serve
back to the Panthers and an ace, Jamie McDonald kill and CSU attack
error ended the first set in favor of High Point.
Parrott and Klinger combined for a block early in the second set
and Wynter Davis and Sydney Tracy added one of their own to put the
Lady Bucs up 6-5 in the game, but High Point responded with an 8-2
run to build a 13-8 lead following a CSU attack error. The lead
grew to seven at 19-12 following a service ace by Chelsea Davis,
but Charleston Southern rallied back, cutting the lead down to five
at 23-18 following a kill by Parrott off the assist from Kirsten
Struksnes.
Back-to-back kills by Courtney Johnk and Davis closed out the
set in favor of the Panthers, 25-18, sending the team into the
break.
Charleston Southern jumped out of the gates early in the third
set, scoring the first four points and five of the first six as
Wynter Davis had back-to-back kills and added a block to give CSU
the 5-1 lead. High Point steadily battled back in the frame, tying
the set up for the first time at 12-all following two consecutive
CSU attack errors.
The teams tied up the set seven times over the next 20 points,
with Windsor knotting the set up at 22-all with a kill. CSU's rally
stalled with the final point as High Point closed out the match on
a block by Farus and Simpson to take the Big South Conference
victory.
Davis added eight kills and four blocks from the floor for the
Lady Bucs as Charleston Southern hit .119 as a team in the match.
Klinger added seven kills and five digs, while Windsor added six
kills and nine digs in the loss.
Defensively, CSU recorded 50 digs for the second consecutive
match led by libero Ashley Higginbothem's 15 digs from the floor,
while Struksnes added two blocks to go with 28 set assists on the
afternoon.
Charleston Southern returns home next weekend as they welcome
Coastal Carolina to the Buccaneer Field House on Friday, October
5th, for a Big South Conference match. First serve between the
Buccaneers and the Chanticleers is set for 7 p.m.
