AUBURN, Ala. - Four hits from sophomore outfielder Brian Welch
weren't enough to power the Charleston Southern baseball team (4-7)
past Purdue as the Bucs took a 5-2 loss to the Boilermakers in the
final day of the Auburn Tournament at Plainsman Park in Auburn on
Sunday.
Welch was a perfect 4-for-4 and crossed the plate for one of the
team's two runs. Alex Tomasovich was 1-for-4 with the team's
other run of the day while Drew Woodall went 1-for-4 to collect an
RBI.
Patrick Dolan got the start for the Bucs, giving up three earned
runs (four total) off six hits in 6.0 innings while striking out
four. Corey Deighan pitched the final three innings in relief,
giving up one unearned run off of three hits while recording a
strikeout.
Kevin Plawecki and Cameron Perkins each had two hits for the
Boilermakers, while Stephen Talbott recorded two hits and two
runs. Calvin Gunter gave up two runs - one earned - off seven hits
over 5.1 innings, striking out one batter to get the win.
Purdue got on the board first as Perkins singled to right field
to kick off the top of the fourth inning. Plawecki and Andrew
Dixon followed suit. Dixon's hit put Perkins across home plate to
put the Boilermakers up 1-0. They would add another run to the
scoreboard in the top of the fifth when Tablott, who reached on an
error, made it home when Eric Charles grounded out to give Purdue
the 2-0 lead.
The Bucs struck back in the bottom of the inning. Tomasovich
singled to left field and was followed by Bobby Ison, who reached
on an error. The Boilermakers walked Cody Austin to load the bases
with no outs. Jaren Sustar then grounded into a double-play that
allowed Tomasovich to make it home and cut the deficit to one run
at 2-1 in favor of Purdue.
Plawecki then homered for Purdue at the top of the sixth to make
it a two run game once again at 3-1. The Bucs would also score in
the sixth, as Welch collected his second hit of the day in the
bottom of the sixth. He was driven home on a double by Woodall to
put the score at 3-1, still in favor or Purdue.
However the Boilermakers would pad the lead in the seventh, with
Talbott and David Miller scoring on passed balls to give Purdue the
5-2 win.
The Bucs will return to Charleston where they will host Georgia
Southern on May 6 at CSU Ballpark in a 2 p.m. contest.
