CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern tennis team continued
its recent stellar play with a 6-1 win over Liberty on Friday
morning at the Buccaneer Tennis Center. CSU (8-1) has now won five
in a row overall and is off to a 2-0 start in Big South Conference
action.
The Bucs claimed eight of the nine matches from the Flames,
including all three doubles bouts. Alexandra Walters and Yvonne
Hubler improved their team-best doubles mark to 5-2 with an 8-3 win
over Liberty's Ally Sheeran and Rebekah Jenkins, while Olga Makhova
and Marija Dzakovic cruised to an 8-4 triumph at the number one
spot. Angelica Sidorenko and Alia Nour made it a clean sweep at the
number three slot, meanwhile, with an 8-2 pasting of Liberty's
Nicola Wellman and Jessie Boda.
The Flames secured their only win of the day at number two
singles, as Cam Richard bested Sidorenko by a 6-4, 6-1 count.
Walters provided the highlight of play for Mike Baker's CSU squad,
running her mark to a perfect 9-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Makhova,
Hubler, Dzakovic, and Nour all earned straight-set victories as
well, with Liberty garnering no more than 3 points in any of those
ten combined sets.
CSU heads back to the courts bright and early Saturday morning
against cross-town rival College of Charleston. The Bucs dropped a
5-2 decision to the Cougars last season. Competition is slated to
begin at 8:30 a.m., and will take place at the Tennis Center at
Patriots Point.
