CHARLESTON, S.C. - Kristin Heldt and Courtney Johnk had a
match-high 13 kills apiece as High Point topped Charleston Southern
on Friday evening inside the Buccaneer Field House, winning in four
sets, 25-21, 25-10, 22-25, 25-16.
Senior middle blocker Wynter Davis led Charleston Southern
(12-20, 4-9 BSC) with 10 kills on the afternoon as CSU hit .124
from the floor in the loss. High Point (20-9, 9-4 BSC) had four
players in double-digits with Chelsea Davis recording the
double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs in the win.
"High Point came in and played with a high level of intensity in
the match and they made several plays to take the first two sets,"
commented head coach Al Givens in the loss. "We challenged our team
to show resolve and battle and we kept our composure, coming from
behind to win the third set."
High Point and Charleston Southern battled through a tie for the
first 12 points of the first set as CSU took the 7-6 lead following
an HPU attack error. Michelle Chakirelis followed with a kill,
sparking a 13-3 run as Jamie McDonald placed in a pair of kills
during the stretch, while Davis added a service ace as the Panthers
went up 19-10.
CSU battled all the way back, tying the match up at 21-all
behind three consecutive kills by Davis during their 11-2 run, with
Meredith Parrott evening the score after a kill. However, the run
ended on a Johnk point and back-to-back High Point blocks closed
out the set as the Panthers took the first set, 25-21.
Five kills by Kristin Heldt sparked a 13-3 run in the second set
as the Panthers went up 19-6 following a block by Johnk and
Chakirelis. The lead increased to 14 at 22-8 following a Molly
Barlow service ace and Johnk closed out the 25-10 victory with a
final ace as High Point went up 2-0.
Following the break, Charleston Southern and High Point battled
through a tie over the first 24 points of the set with neither team
able to build more than a three-point advantage as McDonald knotted
up the set at 12-all. The kill sparked a 5-0 run for the Panthers
with McDonald placing in a pair of kills to go up 16-12.
The Lady Bucs fought back on Michaela Luna's serve as Katrina
Houston, Davis and Siraya Windsor recorded kills tying the set up
at 20-all. The CSU run continued with five of the final seven
points in the frame as the Lady Bucs took the third set on a kill
by Kirsten Struksnes, closing out the 25-22 victory.
A 7-0 run broke the fourth set wide open on McDonald's serve as
four different players recorded points as the Panthers went up 13-8
in the frame. The teams traded points the rest of the way with the
Lady Bucs unable to cut into the lead as High Point closed out the
final set on Davis' kill to end the match following the 25-16
victory.
Davis hit .364 from the floor in the match to lead the Lady
Bucs, while Windsor added eight kills and a team-high 11 digs in
the loss. Struksnes set up the attack with 31 set assists, while
Luna added 10 digs defensively for CSU.
McDonald finished with 10 kills offensively for High Point,
while Simpson had a double-double for the Panthers with 45 set
assists and 12 digs. Johnk added five blocks in addition to her 13
kills in the four-set victory.
"Wynter played really well today and we had different people
come into the match and spark our team as Ashley Johnston,
(Michaela) Luna, Maggie Murphy and (Katrina) Houston all had great
sets during the match," said Givens about the team's efforts.
"We've been struggling to start faster for the past few weeks and
we hope to address it and solve it tomorrow in the season finale
with a playoff spot on the line."
Charleston Southern closes out the 2012 regular season tomorrow
evening at the Buccaneer Field House as CSU welcomes Campbell to
Charleston, S.C. First serve between the Lady Bucs and the Fighting
Camels is set for 7 p.m.
