CSU Starts Strong But Eventually Falls To Wake Forest

WINSTON SALEM N.C.: After a strong opening game, The Lady Bucs fell to tournament-host Wake Forest (25-20, 17-25,11-25,15-25) on day two of the Deacon Tournament in Winston Salem N.C. Sep. 3.


CSU was led once again by Kayla Klinger who amassed 15 kills, five digs and two service aces. Amy Nokes notched a double-double posting 22 assists and 10 digs. CSU freshmen stepped up as Ashley Higginbothem led the team with 24 digs, and Sydney Tracy had a near double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. As a team, the Lady Bucs totaled 44 kill on 150 total attacks, 41 assists, and 56 digs.


The Demon Deacons displayed a balanced attack led by two players with double-doubles. Kadija Fornah led WF with 13 kills and 16 digs while Carlin Salmon had 11 kills to go with 12 block assists. Danae Rosendall paced the Wake Forest attack with 39 assists. Wake Forest finished the match with 49 kills on 126 total attacks 45 assists and 60 digs. WF edged out CSU in hitting percentage .325 to .073.

Set one started with a Wake Forest kill, Kayla Klinger quickly answered with a kill of her own to tie the set 1-1. WF would score the next three points before an error and a Wynter Davis kill brought CSU within two 5-3. Davis would record another kill to keep the Lady Bucs close 6-4. An Amy Nokes service ace along with an Andrea Keesee kill would give CSU the slight lead 10-8. Consecutive kills by Kayla Klinger extended the lead to three 13-10. WF would bring the set within one, but a three point CSU run would give the Buccaneers a four point advantage 19-15. Wake Forest would attempt a late-game comeback but CSU would prove too much as a Wynter Davis kill won the set for the Lady Bucs 25-20. CSU held the kills lead for the set 15-12.


Kayla Klinger opened the second set with a kill to give CSU the 1-0 advantage. Wake Forest would string together consecutive points to take the lead 6-2. Another Kayla Klinger kill brought the Buccaneers within three 6-3. Back to back CSU kill by Wynter Davis and Sydney Tracy help close the gap 8-6. WF would start to pull away from CSU building a seven point cushion 14-7. After trading points for a while, a Sydney Tracy kill would cut the lead to five 20-15. CSU would get no closer as a 4-0 WF run would end the set with Wake Forest on top 25-17. The Lady Bucs led in kills and service aces with 12 and two respectively. Wake Forest totaled six blocks.


The third set opened with back to back CSU points as a Wynter Davis kill and an Ashley Higginbothem service ace gave the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead. Wake Forest would battle back and put together a 6-0 run to take the 6-2 lead. An Erin LaVenice kill brought CSU within three 6-3, but WF would put another run together to stretch it to eight 11-3. Kills by Andrea Keesee and Sydney Tracy capped a 3-0 CSU run which brought the Buccaneers close 11-6. The Demon Deacons would then start to impose their will stretching the lead to double digits, until consecutive Kadija Fornah kills gave Wake Forest the 25-11 victory. Wake Forest held the kills edge 17-9.


Wake Forest would jump out to an early 3-0 lead to start the fourth set. A kill by Erin LaVenice would put CSU on the board 3-1. Two WF service errors and a kill by Amy Nokes brought the score to 7-4 Wake Forest. Back to back kills by Sydney Tracy and Kayla Klinger, along with a WF service error brought CSU within one 9-8. CSU would keep it close as a Kayla Klinger kill brought the Wake lead to 15-13. WF would put a run together to stretch their lead to nine 23-14. A Sydney Tracy kill would be the last points put up by the Lady Bucs who fell 25-15. Wake Forest finished the set with 11 kills and eight blocks in comparison to CSU's eight and one.

CSU (0-6) will finish the Deacon Invitational taking on North Florida Sep 3. at 4 p.m.
