CSU Falls In Tournament Opener

WINSTON SALEM N.C.: The Charleston Southern volleyball team opened the Deacon Invitational with a loss to Arkansas (25-18, 25-11, 25-10) Sep. 2. in Winston Salem.

For the second game in a row the Lady Bucs were led by Kayla Klinger who knocked in 12 kills on 29 total attacks, hitting for .276. Amy Nokes chipped in 11 assists to go along with a dig. For the game CSU tallied 22 kills, 21 assists and 22 digs. The Razorbacks spaced their attack as Amanda Anderson, Kelli Stipanovich, and Roslandy Acosta each recorded eight kills. Raymariely Santos led the Arkansas attack recording 31 assist and four digs.

Overall Arkansas totaled 37 kills, 35 assists, and 32 digs. In the opening game, Arkansas clung to an early two point lead. A kill by Erin LaVenice would bring CSU within one 3-4 before Arkansas steadily started to widen the gap. With the game getting out of their reach 14-24, the Lady Bucs would string a run together led by an Amy Nokes assist and kill to close the gap 18-24. However, a kill by Jasmine Norton would shut the door on the Buccaneers 25-18. Arkansas held the kills edge 13-10 in the first set.

The second set saw both teams trading blows early. Back to back Kayla Klinger kills knotted the set up 2-2. The game would again be tied at four a piece after a kill from Erin Lavenice. An Arkansas 8-0 run would start to open the game up before an Andrea Keesee kill stopped the bleeding at 7-18. The Razorbacks never looked back and kept CSU at a safe distance for the remainder of the set finishing with a 25-11 victory. Arkansas hit for .524 with 13 kills in comparison to CSU's .037 and eight kills.

The deciding game saw Arkansas jump out to an early 3-0 lead before a Kayla Klinger kill put CSU on the board 3-1. Helped by three service aces the Razorbacks began to stretch the deficit 16-3. Arkansas would play determined throughout the remainder of the game and closed out CSU 25-10. CSU led the kill count with 12 compared to Arkansas's 10.

CSU (0-5) will continue play in the Deacon Tournament as the face off against host Wake Forest Sep.3 at noon, and North Florida Sep. 3 at 4 p.m.
