Lady Bucs Drop Home Opener

CHARLESTON S.C.: The Buccaneers had a less than joyful homecoming as they lost to Wofford (30-28, 25-19, 25-20) at the Buc Dome Aug. 30.

CSU was led by Kayla Klinger who knocked in 10 kills to go along with two digs. Amy Nokes played well in her final home opener as a Buccaneer totaling 30 assists and seven digs. Ashley Higginbothem led the Lady Bucs with 11 digs, and Duke Invitational All-Tournament team member Erin LaVenice chipped in with six kills hitting for .167. As a team, CSU totaled 93 total attacks, 35 kills, and 33 assists.

Rachel Woodlee led the Terriers in kills notching 12 hitting at .333. Bekah Dorsey continued her strong early-season play with 26 assists and 5 digs. Amanda Liguori added eight kills and six kills. The Terriers had 85 total attacks, 38 kills, and 33 assists for the game.

The first set was marked with intense play by both sides. CSU started off strong, Kayla Klinger notched a kill followed by an ace to bring the score 3-3. Each point was a battle as a strong kill by Sydney Tracy brought CSU within two 5-7. Wofford would go on a mini run to jump out to the 15-10 lead. Kills by Sydney Tracy and Kayla Klinger brought the Bucs within one 17-16. The teams would exchange points and errors with WU up 20-17. Two Kayla Klinger kills to go along with one from Sydney Tracy brought CSU within 22-21. CSU would tie the game 23-23 forcing Wofford to take a timeout. Following the timeout both teams would trade set-winning strikes until finally Wofford closed out CSU 30-28. For the set, Wofford had 19 kills and 15 assists in comparison to CSU's 15 and 15.

The intensity carried over to the second set as both teams came out strong. Wofford hopped out to an early 4-1 lead before a kill by Erin Lavenice sparked a three point run to tie the match 4-4. The game continued to be close as neither team could build a lead larger than four. A kill by Sydney Tracy brought the Bucs close 13-10. The Terriers began to build a slight lead and kept the Lady Bucs at a four-point distance for the remainder of the match. WU took the victory 25-19. The Terriers had 11 kills, 10 assists and seven digs, CSU tallied 10 kills, 10 assists, and four digs.

Kayla Klinger came out strong in the third set with two kills to give CSU the early 3-1 lead. A few CSU errors allowed Wofford to close the gap eventually tying the match 5-5. An Andrea Keesee kill along with a WU error gave the Bucs a two point advantage 7-5. WU would battle back to take the 9-8 lead before going on a 6-2 run to extend the deficit to 15-10. Wofford would keep that five point cushion for the remainder of the match closing out the set and match 25-20. CSU had the statistical edge, accumulating 10 kills, eight assists, and 11 digs compared to Wofford's nine kills, nine assists, and eight digs.

The Lady Bucs will head to Winston-Salem N.C. Sep 2-3 to participate in the Wake Forest Invitational.
