CHARLESTON, S.C - CSU defeated the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville at
a score of 8-0 this afternoon. Today's match was CSU's most
lopsided win of the season. The win improves the Buc's record to an
overall mark of 10-4-1 (4-0-1 BSC) and loss drops the Bulldogs to
1-10-0 (0-3-0 BSC).
The Buc's controlled today's match from the outset. CSU was
incessantly on the attack trying to time their runs against the
offside trap of UNC Asheville. This made for break away chances
when they got it right, and ten offside's flags when they jumped
the gun.
It was not long into the match before the tie was broken in the
6th minute when Marky Boyce found herself on a break away one on
one with the opposing keeper. She calmly tucked the ball into the
back of the net for her 17th goal of the season.
Boyce's second goal of the day came in the 26th minute when she
found herself in another one on one situation with the keeper. She
finished for her 18th of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Buc's third goal of the day came when Olivia Urig scored her
first goal of the season. It came off a set piece in which she bent
a low shot around the five man wall and past the keeper. This was
the second time this season the Bucs have scored off a set piece,
the first coming from Senior Caitlin Wesnesky against VMI this past
Sunday.
Boyce completed her hat trick not long after Urig's goal in the
44th minute. Olivia Urig sent a nice through ball to Boyce who was
once again one on one with the keeper and once again calmly put it
away for the 4-0 lead. The current NCAA leader in goals scored
tallied a hat trick in the first half alone, further bolstering her
bid to be the nation's leading scorer come season's end.
The Buc's fifth goal on the day came when freshman Emma Krantz
sent a nice cross in front of goal and fellow freshman Allison
Lewis put it past the keeper for her fourth goal on the season.
Freshman Toni Lashley scored the Buc's sixth goal on the day.
She burst around the outside back of UNC Asheville and toward goal.
She then cut it back against the grain and eluded a defender with a
nimble half scissor kick for the goal. It was an impressive
athletic finish for her fourth goal of the season.
Senior Michelle Dennis added the seventh goal on the afternoon.
Dennis made a quick move on the keeper and dribbled around her for
a chance on an open net. She put it in for her third goal of the
season.
The Buc's eighth and final goal on the day came from the boot of
Rebecca Hollstegge. Freshman Tori Wright played a through ball to
Hollstegge who put it in for her first goal on the season. The late
goal was a nice reward for Hollstegge, who was back for only her
second match after experiencing lingering affects of a concussion
she incurred earlier in the season. This was Hollstegge's first
goal on the season, as well being Wright's first assist of her
career.
This is the Buc's fourth win in Big South play and extends their
unbeaten streak to seven matches. They are now in sole possession
of first place in the Big South Conference standings after Winthrop
defeated Radford yesterday.
The Buccaneers look to remain unbeaten in Big South play on
Monday. They will play a home match against Presbyterian College,
who is currently in third place in the Big South Conference
standings. Kick off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Buccaneer field.
