ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Marky Boyce got the game-winner and Jena
Lalich earned her second-straight clean sheet as the Charleston
Southern soccer team defeated University of North Carolina
Asheville 1-0 Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
Charleston Southern (10-4-1, 3-1-1 Big South Conference) was
outshot (13-12) for just the second time this season in the cold,
windy conditions, but the backline held firm and the Bulldogs
(4-6-1, 1-3-0 BSC) were never able to equalize as CSU took three
conference points in hostile territory.
UNCA was playing with a strong cross wind for the first half.
The Bulldog defenders used that to their advantage by sailing balls
over the top instead of through the midfield to try and spring a
forward toward the goal.
The idea was a good one, but the execution was foiled by the CSU
defense that time and time again cleared away any and all
danger.
The pressure allowed the Bulldogs to take a 5-0 advantage in
corner kicks in the opening half, but they were never able to use
those set pieces to find a goal.
The best chance UNCA got in the entire game came in the 22nd
minute when McKenna Stockhausen ripped a shot from 20 yards out
that hit the crossbar. The ball bounced high into the air and
settled onto the foot of Chloe Small-McCleary, the Bulldogs leading
scorer with four goals, just to the right of the six-yard box.
She blasted a shot that seemed destined to find the back of the
net, but instead Lalich came up with the miraculous save. Not only
did Lalich save the shot, but she was also able to hold onto the
ball and avoid any kind of rebound.
The Bulldogs took two more shots in the next minute of play to
test Lalich again, but she was up to the task as she came up big in
the first half for Charleston Southern with six of her seven
saves.
Now it was the Buccaneers turn to try and make something
happen.
Lindsey Trexler possessed the ball on the left flank in the 39th
minute and she sent a cross into the box to the boot of Jen Vroman.
Vroman tried to make a move but was unable to turn as she was
playing with her back to goal.
She alertly tipped a pass to Marky Boyce, who did not hesitate
as she sent a shot from the top of the penalty box over the head of
UNCA goalkeeper Veronica Lazar and into the back of the net to give
CSU the 1-0 advantage.
Boyce also scored off a header in the 41st minute but the play
was called back due to an offside violation.
Charleston Southern used the wind to maintain possession better
in the second half, and despite outshooting CSU 6-3 in the second
half, the Bulldogs were only able to get one of those shots on
frame and could not find a way to crack the defense.
Small-McCleary came into the game as the most dangerous
goal-scorer for UNCA, and Casey Bolduc was called upon to shadow
the speedy forward throughout the match. Bolduc was up to the task
as she shut down Small-McCleary, allowing her only two shots with
just one legitimate scoring opportunity.
Bolduc played her position flawlessly, and so did the rest of
the backline that included Kelsey Riggs, Caitlin Wesnesky and Staci
Ulichnie. Lalich and the defenders combined for their
second-straight shutout.
Lalich (5-1-1) finished the game with seven saves en route to
her fifth-career clean sheet. Lazar (3-5-1) made four saves and
allowed one goal to take the loss.
CSU now has 10 wins this season and has hit the double-digit win
mark for the fifth time in school history (11 wins in 1996; 12 wins
in 1993, '94 and '07).
Boyce scored her conference-leading ninth goal of the season,
and she put home her sixth game-winning tally. She has now tied the
school record for most game-winning goals in a single season (Wendy
Ennis, 1993).
Boyce also moved into sole possession of tenth on the CSU
all-time goal-scoring list (20), breaking a tie with assistant
coach Christi Rostin. She is alone in ninth on the all-time point
list (53), and is tied for sixth on the single-season point list
(9g-7a=25p).
Vroman has now assisted on a goal in each of her last four games
and she now has five helpers on the season.
This was CSU's third-straight clean sheet against UNCA, and the
second-straight in Asheville. Charleston Southern moves to 8-13-2
all-time against the Bulldogs and 3-0-1 in the last four
meetings.
The Bucs also move to 4-3-1 on the road this season, and are now
3-0-1 in their last four games away from Buccaneer Field.
Charleston Southern will next travel to Clinton, S.C., Oct. 18
for a 2 p.m. matchup with Presbyterian College.
