Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern softball team dropped both games in their doubleheader against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Tuesday night, falling 3-1 in 9 innings in game one and 13-2 in game two. The game-two loss was the fifth game in a row that the Bucs (9-13) have lost.
Game One
Annah Junge started the first game for the Bucs and was terrific through the first 4.0 innings, until the fifth inning, when the Buckeyes (11-7) singled up the middle to take the 1-0 lead.
The Bucs tied it in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Lacy Johnson led the inning off with a single. Two batters later,
Ashley Meckley did the same thing, but a throwing error by the Buckeyes allowed for Johnson to go to third and Meckley to advance to second. Then, with two outs,
Harper Schoeneweis tied the game with an RBI single. The Bucs tried to take the lead, but
Ashlyn Cribb was thrown out at home to keep it a 1-1 game.
Neither team scored again until the ninth inning, when the Buckeyes hit a two-out, two-strike home run off of Junge to take the 2-1 lead.
The Bucs had an opportunity to win it at the end, getting runners to first and second with two outs, but
Weslin Jones struck out to end the inning.
Junge took the loss to fall to 8-3. She pitched 9.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, 0 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Game Two
The Buckeyes got their bats going in game two. Neither team scored until the fourth inning, when the Buckeyes scored three runs. Three-straight singles, a sac fly and a sac bunt made it 3-0.
Charleston Southern responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs,
Charlee Yourman lined a double into left field, and
Gracie Prince followed that up with a double of her own to put the Bucs on the board. Two batters later,
Lacy Johnson made it 3-2 with an RBI single.
Ohio State got both of those runs back in the fifth and sixth inning with a pair of home runs off of
Riley Lauffer to make it 6-2.
Then, in the seventh inning, the Buckeyes broke it open with seven runs, sending 11 hitters to the plate and hitting two home runs in the inning. They hit four home runs overall in game two and five total on the night.
Lauffer took the loss, falling to 1-9 on the year. She gave up a season-high 12 runs on 15 hits in 6.1 innings.
Maggie Carpenter finished the seventh inning, throwing the final 0.2 innings and was charged with a run.
On Deck
The Bucs begin Big South play this weekend, as they head to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate. Friday will be a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. while the final game of the series will be on Saturday at 1 p.m.
