CSU Takes Third Place at Hatter Classic With 9-4 Win Over Stetson

DeLAND, Fla. - A five-run fifth inning propelled the CSU softball team to a 9-4 victory Sunday over the host Stetson Hatters in the consolation game of the 2011 Hatter Classic in DeLand. With the win, CSU claims third place at the event, having gone 3-2 on the weekend.

The Buccaneers (6-9) scored nine runs on 11 hits, their second 11-hit ballgame in a row. CSU recorded 29 runs in five games during the tournament. Stetson falls to 6-8 on the season.

Kimberly Hobbs pitched her second complete game of the season, improving her record to 4-4 on the season by allowing four runs on five hits over seven innings. Stetson's Camille Czarnecki fell to 2-3 on the season, allowing four runs on five hits in four innings pitched.

Three Buccaneers recorded multiple hits on Sunday. Jessica Brock went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Ari Tedesco extended her hitting streak to four games with her second two-hit game, also driving in a run. Kristin Kelleher batted 2-for-3 with a career-high three runs scored. CSU hit three doubles, one each from Erin Kegley, Megan Lombard and Jana Matthews.

Stetson had five hits from five different players, including home runs by Chelsey Trotto and Merdith Owen.

Following a scoreless first inning, CSU broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the second inning. Kelleher led off with a single, and Brock reached on an error. Tedesco drove in Kelleher with a single up the middle. CSU then earned a bases-loaded situation with two outs, which ended with a popout.

Stetson took its only lead of the game in the top of the third, as Trotto hit a two-run homer, driving in Chrissy Morello with nobody out. Hobbs worked through the rest of the inning, and Stetson led, 2-1.

CSU reclaimed the advantage in the bottom of the third, as Brock drove in Kelleher and Courtney Konyk with a two-out, bases-loaded single. After three, the Bucs led, 3-2.

The Buccaneers tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their edge to six at 8-2. Brock singled in Matthews, and Kelleher scored on a throwing error. Melissa Adams recorded an RBI groundout for a 6-2 advantage, and Lombard made it 8-2 with a two-RBI double. The team then added one more in the sixth, as Kimberly Braxton drove in Brock for her first RBI of the season and a 9-2 lead going into Stetson's final at-bat.

The Hatters sliced the deficit to five at 9-4 in the seventh, as Alyssa Oddo singled and Owen drove her in with a home run with no outs. Hobbs then retired the side to put the finishing touches on the 9-4 complete-game five-hitter.

CSU will play host to the Lowcountry Invitational Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5. Also competing will be: Georgetown, USC Upstate and UNC Wilmington. The Buccaneers open play Friday at 1 p.m. against USC Upstate.
