Eric Terrill concluded his 24th season at the helm of the Charleston Southern women's soccer program in 2018 after leading the Buccaneers to their best finish in seven years.
CSU posted a record of 9-6-2 a year ago, its first winning season since 2011, and had a 5-4-1 mark in the Big South for its first winning conference slate since 2010. The Bucs boasted one of the top defenses in the Big South, blanking six opponents, and had consecutive shutouts of High Point, Winthrop and Hampton in conference play.
Paced by a veteran backfield of senior goalkeepers Jazmin Gonzalez and Alyssa Dellacqua and defenders Grace Clark, Taylor Francis and Emilie Gilbert, the Bucs finished the year with a goals against average of 1.01 and a save percentage of .847, with both marks establishing new school records.
Terrill is the second winningest coach in Big South history with a career record of 174-234-39 and 72-94-19 in the Big South, and his tenure includes a share of the Big South regular season championship in 2010. Terrill joined the CSU athletic department in 1995 after serving as the head coach at Chowan.
The Bucs have recorded four double-digit win seasons under Terrill and won 12 games three times in a four-year span between 2007 and 2010. That came as part of a stretch in which CSU had five straight winning seasons with a record of 54-33-10 and 24-13-7 in the Big South. The Bucs also garnered 11 victories in 1996 and won nine games on three occasions including 2018.
CSU has proven to be a tough team to beat at home under Terrill, winning 101 games against only 75 losses and 19 ties. The Bucs were undefeated at home in 2007 (6-0) and 2008 (6-0-3) and followed that up with a home mark of 19-8-1 over the next three seasons.
Under Terrill's direction, the Bucs have had 68 selections to All-Big South teams and 13 named to the All-Freshman squad. Marky Boyce was named the Big South Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010, and Carrie Terrill earned the honor in 2001. Betsy Lapp (1998) and Michelle Dennis (2007) were conference freshmen of the year, and Wendy Ennis (1995 and 1996) and Katie Crona (2004 and 2005) were honored as Big South Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Boyce was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association All-Southeast Region third team in 2009 and 2010.
Ennis and Mary Pipilas were both named to the Big South All-Decade team were for the 1990s, and Boyce was chosen for the 2000-09 era.
During his time at CSU, his recruiting classes have boasted numerous accolades, including recruiting the top-ranked class in the Big South and the 23rd-ranked class in the East Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine in 2006.
In his second season at CSU in 1996, Terrill led the Bucs to a record of 11-8 and a 4-0 win over UNC Greensboro in the opening round of the Big South Tournament. CSU ran off a six-game winning streak with five shutouts early in the year, tied for the longest in school history, and finished the regular season with victories over in-state rivals Furman, Wofford and College of Charleston.
Between 1998 and 2005, the Bucs finished at or above .500 in the Big South five times and advanced to the second round of the conference tournament on six occasions. The 2007 season proved to be a breakout campaign as CSU went 12-6-1 and 5-2 in league play.
Three years later, Boyce was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Year with league-leading totals of 19 goals and 43 points and the Bucs were conference co-champions with a 6-2-1 league mark and 12-7-1 overall. A 9-8-2 mark in 2011 provided CSU with its fifth-straight winning season.
Terrill’s first head coaching job came in 1994 when he started both the men's and women's soccer programs at Division II Chowan. He started his career as an assistant men's coach at Appalachian State from 1987-89 followed by four years as assistant men's and women's coach at Lees-McRae.
Terrill has served as a South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Olympic Development Program Coach, as well as a Region III coaching staff member. He also holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
Terrill and wife Debra reside in Summerville, S.C., and have a son, Easton, and daughters Chandler and Riley.
