Bucs Come Up Short in Friday Afternoon Dual with College of Charleston

CHARLESTON – Charleston Southern volleyball battled College of Charleston on Friday afternoon at McAlister Field House, but the Cougars claimed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-22) victory in the Lowcountry Volleyball Championship.

The Buccaneers fell to 3-2 on the season with the loss, while College of Charleston improved to 3-2. The Cougars controlled the match offensively, hitting .442 as a team while Charleston Southern finished at .230.

College of Charleston took control early in the opening set, using a 7-0 run to turn a 4-3 advantage into an 11-4 lead. The Cougars continued to build their advantage throughout the frame, eventually taking a 20-7 lead before closing out the set, 25-10. Charleston Southern managed nine kills in the opening frame but hit just .071.

The second set featured a much more competitive battle. Charleston Southern stayed within striking distance throughout the early stages before taking a 13-9 advantage following a kill from Jenna Kitchens. College of Charleston responded with a four-point run to even the set at 13-13, and the teams continued trading points deep into the frame. The Cougars eventually created separation late, taking a 24-20 lead before closing the set, 25-22.

The Buccaneers once again battled in the third set, building an early 7-5 lead before College of Charleston answered with a 4-0 run. Charleston Southern remained within one point at several stages, including a 15-15 tie and a 19-19 deadlock. The Cougars scored three straight points to move ahead 22-19, and despite a late Bucs push, College of Charleston finished the match with a 25-22 third-set victory.

Notables:

  • Charleston Southern finished the match with 38 kills, 31 digs and four total blocks. The Bucs also recorded three service aces while forcing College of Charleston into five attack errors.

  • Brynn Minter led the Buccaneers with 14 kills, adding five digs and a service ace. She also finished with 15.0 points.

  • Faith Burch recorded nine kills on 21 attacks while hitting a .381, adding a block assist for 9.5 points.

  • Tristin Sutton paced the Charleston Southern offense with 16 assists, while adding five digs and a kill without committing an attack error.

  • Surima Akat contributed four kills while hitting .250 and added a block assist.

  • Jenna Kitchens provided a strong offensive spark off the bench, recording three kills on six attempts without an errorfor a .500 hitting percentage.

  • Presley Morris anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 11 digs, while also recording three assists and a service ace.
