Gianna Simon Finds the Back of the Net as Bucs Battle at The Citadel

CHARLESTON - The Charleston Southern women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead Thursday afternoon, highlighted by Gianna Simon's first goal in 735 days, before The Citadel rallied to defeat the Buccaneers, 3-1, at Washington Light Infantry Field.

Simon opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, finding the back of the net for the first time since September 5, 2024. After battling through injuries, Simon's goal marked a special return to the scoresheet for the Buccaneers.

Charleston Southern continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half, recording 10 shots while holding The Citadel to eight. The Bulldogs, however, answered in the 38th minute when Jasiah Pack scored off an assist from Avery Lang to send the match into halftime tied at 1-1.

The Citadel took its first lead just 12 seconds into the second half when Samantha Grantham scored off an assist from Caelynn January. The Bulldogs added a third goal in the 74th minute as Lang scored off a pass from Pack. CSU continued to pressure the Citadel goal late, with Gianna Simon, Amélie Boyle and Rowyn Serne each putting shots on target in the final 17 minutes, but it wasn't enough to climb back.
