FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. - Charleston Southern senior golfer
Dewi John became the fifth Big South Individual Medalist in Buccaneer history Tuesday afternoon at the Big South Men's Golf Championship.
The Big South Championship was held at Ocean Creek Golf Course (par 71, 6,546 yards) on Fripp Island, S.C.
"I'm so proud of Dewi," said head coach Scooter Clark. "He's had a lot of experience playing here at Fripp Island, some good and some not so good, and he's handled it all with grace and class. It's so fitting that his last go around here at the Big South Championship ended with him coming out victorious. I can't wait to watch him continue his collegiate career and battle with the best in the NCAA Regionals in May!"
John was on fire the entire tournament, posting rounds of 69, 68, and 69 to finish 7-under par. With this win, John is CSU's first Individual Medalist since 2016 and has punched his ticket to the NCAA Regionals. John will find out where he's competing next on Wednesday, May 6 during the Selection Show live on the Golf Channel.
As a team, the Buccaneers finished fifth in the eight-team field, just narrowly missing the four-team cut to advance to match play.
John led the Bucs with a first-place finish shooting 7-under par. He recorded 15 birdies and an eagle over the course of three days to win the championship by two strokes.
Alex North finished tied for 13th in the field, carding rounds of 76, 71, and 69 to finish 3-over par. Theo Takman tied for 17th at 4-over par. Takman recorded rounds of 71, 74, and 72. Freshman
Owen Newberry placed 36th, shooting 11-over par (72-76-76) for the tournament while
Bailey Bjornson rounded out CSU's lineup at 13-over par (76-80-70).
In addition to his Medalist honors, John was also named to the All-Championship Team.
